HOMECOMING ’97, WEDNESDAY, JULY 23,1997 PAGE 19. BRUSSELS 672 ' iCM MOW* 88 BRUSSELS We, at Bachert Meats Ltd. join to congratulate the Village of Brussels as it celebrates its 125th year. We enjoy living and working adjacent to this warm and friendly community. CENTENNIAL COUNCIL Proud moment— Former Clerk-Treasurer for Brussels Bill King shows off the plaque installed to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the village. Brussels planned for Belgian guest From the April 16, 1979 issue of The Brussels Post. Brussels has a sister city in Belgium and in May, Brussels, Belgium will be celebrating its 1000th birthday. And the Belgians are sending a reporter to Brussels, Ontario to see how the other half lives. There's only one real problem to be solved, the language barrier. The reporter wants to know about the way of life here but needs to find some French speaking people. The clerk’s office here is doing the best it can to find some and it hasn't found too many people in the Brussels area. Anybody who can volunteer their services should get in contact with clerk Bill King. Although they are having trouble finding people right within the village area who can speak French the clerk's office has found some Belgian natives outside the area as Rene Vercruyssen of RR 2, Blyth and Julien and Rene Delberque of RR 3, Auburn who are willing to help. George Langlois of Brussels does speak French and his name was just put in at the* clerk's office as one of the possible interpreters. It is interesting to note here that although no reason seems to have been given in history books for the changing of the Brussels, Ontario name from Ainleyville to Brussels, the following information just could be the reason why it was changed. Mrs. Clark Matheson had some information that when the railway was put through Ainleyville a lot of the workers on the railway were CONTINUED ON PAGE 20 We thank our customers most sincerely for their patronage over the past years and we trust we can continue to serve the community with the same quality of service.
