Memories of yesteryears
Good crowds at Lions' 1971 Polar Daize events
From the January 21,1971 issue of in the auditorium of the public
The Brussels Post. school, with a capacity crowd on
Friday night a concert was held hand to witness the choosing and
crowning of the "Polar Daize"
Queen.
Miss Linda Wilson, daughter of
Mrs. Idella Wilson of Brussels, and
a Gradel 1 student at Wingham
District High School won the title
and received her crown and ribbon
of office, sheaf of red roses, and
other gifts.
Five other young ladies, Gail
Traviss, Stephanie Watts, Barbara
Muilwyk, Sharon Marks and Nancy
Knight vied for the honour. The
Queen was selected by a panel of
three judges who based their
decision on talent, personality and
appearance. All the girls received a
gift.
Prior to the choosing of the
Queen the chorus of Perth Central
School presented several delightful
numbers in masterful style. Bruce
McCall was the capable Master of
Ceremonies. Lion Max Watts,
welcomed the audience. Lion
President Jas Armstrong spoke
briefly thanking the people for their
support.
Brussels winter carnival "Polar
Daize", the first event of this kind
to be held here, came to an end on
Sunday afternoon with a monster
beef barbecue when approximately
700 were served. The three days of
fun drew a good number of
spectators as well as participants to
most of the activities.
An all day Curling Bonspiel
Friday was the first of the sports
enjoyed. Friday evening after the
crowning of the Queen, a
Torchlight Parade was held on the
main street. The frigid weather
curtailed the participation.
Saturday was Minor Hockey day
at the arena. The most hilarious
event of "Polar Daize" was the
Thunder Mug Races which had
ladies as well as men perched on
their precarious vehicle. There was
many a spill, and many a laugh-
enjoyed by the amused spectators.
At one o'clock there was an
interesting parade, led by the
Legion Pipe Band of Brussels, of
floats featuring everything from a
train to a cow as well as clowns,
horses and riders, etc. Saturday also
was the day of the cross-country ski

Taking the plunge— Brussels Polar Daize, a popular event in
the 1970s, was not for the meek. One challenge for the most
hardy was a dip into the partially frozen Maitland River. In
January, 1972, Wayne Lowe, assisted by an unidentified cohort,
prepares for his frosty plunge.
We would like to wish all
the residents of Brussels
