Hydro consumption results in cutoffs
HOMECOMING '97, WEDNESDAY, JULY 23,1997 PAGE 15.
From the October 13,1948 issue of
The Brussels Post.
The electric power shortage is
acute. Unless Brussels citizens will
voluntarily co-operate in reducing
the consumption to our daily quota
the cut-offs will continue or may
even be increased. We now have
power shut-offs from 11:45 a.m. to
1 p.m. and from 5 to 6 p.m. These
could be avoided, as they are in
some surrounding communities, if
local users of hydro would make a
real effort to keep their
consumption down to a minimum.
We have no factories in Brussels.
Stores and other commercial users
they represent only one-third of
local consumption. Householders
consume two-thirds of the power
used. It is then definitely up to
Brussels housewives to see that our
consumption comes down to the
quota allowed. It requires some
effort and inconvenience but it can
be done and it will remove the
necessity for complete cut-offs.

School boards' ads recruit
From the June 15,1949 issue of The, Brussels Post.
The Wingham District High School Board invites the village of
Brussels and the townships of Grey and Morris to co-operate in the
formation of our enlarged area including a Junior High School at
Brussels and a High School in Wingham.
It is important to realize that the best interests of the Wingham
School area will be served by continuing the school at Brussels
permanently. The school at Wingham will accommodate one hundred
additional pupils, but there are several districts near Wingham that so
far have not joined any high school area. It is the hope and
expectation that the remaining capacity of the Wingham school will be
needed to accommodate senior students and that junior grades will be
provided for in one or more supplementary schools.
The Wingham High School offers options to Shop, Home
Economics, Commercial Work and Agriculture in addition to the usual
academic subjects.

instant you do not require it. Do not
use electrical appliances if you can
do without them and use them at all
times as sparingly as possible. It is
from Monday to Friday that the
shortage is acute so arrange to do
all possible household tasks
requiring electricity, such as
ironing, on Saturday.
Domestic users are asked for
their utmost co-operation to reduce
the power load from Mondays to
Fridays. Civic pride as well as self
interest demands the heartiest co
operation from every citizen.
McIntyre
hits the
big time
From the April 18,1951 issue of
The Brussels Post.
John McIntyre, who was bom in
Brussels and lived here as a child,
with his parents Bert and Mrs.
McIntyre, hit big time hockey when
he performed as wingman for the
Boston Bruins in the opening round
of Stanley Cup playoffs. Tory Greg
of Wingham predicts that McIntyre
is due to make the Major League
next year. The Listowel Banner
hails him as Listowel's John
McIntyre, we won't quarrel with
that for his home has been Listowel
since he left Brussels, but he is a
native Brussels boy.

An open letter to the ratepayers of Brussels and the Townships of
Grey and Morris south of Brussels.
Before the final decision is made by your elected representatives
as to the placing of your municipalities in a High School District, the
members of the Seaforth High School District Board feel that facts not
at present known to you as ratepayers should be made available. It is
important that no hasty decision should be made in this matter
because of the difficulty (in some cases the impossibility) of making
changes after the step has been taken.
We feel that the following facts should be given serious
consideration by the ratepayers and their representatives before any
action is taken towards joining a High School District.
1. Seaforth District High School operates on the lowest mill rate of
any school in Huron County. (2 mills in 1949).
2. Seaforth District High School can accommodate an additional
100 pupils without any building program, which would involve
debenture debt and make it impossible to withdraw from a district, (no
extra cost).
3. Seaforth District High School offers courses Shop Work, Home
Economics, Commercial Work and Special Agriculture in addition to
the customary academic subjects.
4. Seaforth District High School has purchased 5 acres of land
beside the school, and with this purchase, plans an advanced
program in Agriculture, (no extra cost).
5. Seaforth District High School is the school most accessible to
the people of Brussels, south Grey and Morris, even during the winter
months.
In summarizing, we offer to those joining our District: Permanent
Building with modern equipment, competent staff, enthusiastic pupils,
fully equipped gymnasium, large athletic field, Cadet Corps with Bugle
Band, an unexcelled tradition of academic achievement and, during
our three years of operation as an Area, the lowest mill rate in Huron
County.
We wish to emphasize that it is not our purpose or desire to force
the closing of Brussels Continuation School. Any arrangement which
can be worked out to enable the school to carry on will receive our
support and co-operation.
Signed
Seaforth District High School Board.
