HOMECOMING '97, WEDNESDAY, JULY 23,1997 PAGE 11. Memories of yesteryears Showtime — The Brussels Town Hall was the scene of many submitted by Jean Ross, daughter of the late Hazel Matheson, a community and social events. There were stage productions, village historian. dances and concerts held. This photo was from a postcard Paper seeks opinion on town bell From the January 9, 1939 issue of The Brussels Post. Citizens of Brussels: - Jan. 11th, 1939 It has been requested by the Village Council that we ask the people of Brussels to express, through this column, their opinion about the following matter in the next issue of this paper. There has been considerable discussion about the advisability of continuing the ringing of the town bell. Would you like to have the custom continued as in the past? Would you like to have it rang at 8 o'clock in the morning instead of at 1 o'clock as is now done? Would you like to have the ringing of the bell discontinued entirely? The Council would appreciate your prompt response via this paper concerning this matter. The Editor Gipsy Smith's stories relate his hardships, touching his listeners 'Post' says imput shows bell should stay CONTINUED FROM PAGE 10 duet. On Monday evening Gipsy Smith told his life-story, a fascinating tale of an underprivileged boy who trained in the Dr. Bamardo home came to this country at the lender age of 12. However he triumphed over obstacles gaining an education and later became one of Dr. Barnardo's lecturers travelling throughout the world. His Congratulations Brussels on your 125th We 're proud to work & live in this community reminiscences of early hardships deeply touched his listeners while at other times he made them laugh heartily at his wholesome humor. At the conclusion of the second part of his life story he made an appeal to all to live the best they knew. During the intermission the choir of Brussels United Church sang "Crown Him Lord of All." Many hope that on some future occasion Gipsy Simon Smith will conduct a series of services. From the January 28,1939 issue of The Brussels Post. While only two letters asked for last week concerning the ringing of the town bell have been sent to the letterbox, we have had a considerable number who called the office of The Post to state Happy 125th Birthday Brussels emphatically that they wish to have the bell rang as is now done. One citizen even said he would just as soon live in Jamestown if the ringing of the bell was discontinued and an elderly lady stated that if the town bell did not ring as usual Brussels just wouldn't be home and r nfs more. So it seems our citizens are much against any change in the custom that has been carried on for so many years. We did not have a single vote in favour of discontinuing or changing the hour of the "old town bell."
