Finally, the victory worth waiting
for! Last Wednesday, July 16 on
Brussels' own field, the B team was
able to keep the lead over
Palmerston to win the game 5-3.
Starting the game, both teams
had the ball in their end with equal
chances at goals. However, it
wasn't until a fine play by Andrew
Exel, who crossed the ball into
Centerfield to Terry Brown when
the game really began. Brown
received the pass and placed the
ball just around the goalie, to score
Brussels first goal of the night.
Not long after, though, Brussels
was hit with a penalty shot. Kirk
Baillie was caught with a hand ball
in the goal area, and left goalie Rolf
Frischknecht to try to block the
shot. Palmerston shooter, Alicia
Wanless shot the ball high.
Frischknecht leapt in an attempt to
hold the ball out, but was unable to
control it as the ball deflected off of
the top goal bar and into the net.
Brussels B was not about to back
down, however, and soon came
back with a second goal. After a
strong cross in front on a corner
kick, Kirk Baillie belted the ball off
his head and into the net.
Going into the second half with a
2-1 lead, Brussels continued to play
strongly. Phil Graber moved the
ball up the field with his fancy
moves, and Baillie, along with
Brown, kept the ball in the
Palmerston end for most of the

Despite the heat and only two
spares, Brussels beat Wallace 5-2

Chelsey McLellan and William

Somerville who scored all five
goals.
On July 7 the players journeyed
to Newton, leaving with a win 2-1.
Somerville scored the first goal,
then took a corner kick allowing
McLellan to score the winning

at first.
Stepping up to the plate, Kendall
Whitfield tagged a double, and with
the addition of several singles,
Blyth tallied seven runs.
A nice play between Colton
Durie and Brit Peters earned an out
at second. Ashlee Cook lagged a
runner going to first to end the
inning.
Blyth struck for four homers, two
triples, and a double in the second.
Homeruns were blasted by Erin
Moore, Nick Dale, Anthony Peters
and Cook. Adam deBoer and Katie
second half. Leslie Baillie also
played strongly as right half back,
moving the ball in and around the
players' feet. Her strong defense
kept anyone from passing around
her with the ball!
On yet another corner kick,
Brussels pulled their offense into
the Palmerston area to go for their
third goal. Using his head once
more, Baillie planted the ball in the
top left comer of the net.
Palmerston, not ready to give up
came back strongly. Their forward
line moved the ball slickly up the
field. Brussels tried to hold back
any shots on goalie Melissa Evans,
but could not stop Jessica Lise of
Palmerston, who took a long shot
from the top of the area.
Brussels found themselves
fighting to control the ball and
move it down into the Palmerston
end, but came up without success.
Palmerston was given a direct shot
just outside of the area. D. J.
Porterfield took a long hard shot
from outside of the goal area.
Although Evans tried hard to block
the shot, she was unsuccessful in
her attempt.
After another long period of
passing and dribbling the ball in
and around Palmerston players, a
Palmerston defender knocked the
ball with his hand, and a penally
kick was awarded to the Brussels
team. Frischknecht took the shot on
behalf of the Brussels team, and
was successful in putting the ball
goal.
July 14 in Brussels against
Newton II was a hit also. Guarding
post were McLellan, Somerville
and Andrew Van Vliet, allowing no
goals to pass through. Marty Goetz
maneuvered three goals past
Newton, while Somerville scored.
The final score was 5-0 for
Brussels.
All forwards, centre, defence and
halfbacks played strong and hard
for a team effort which resulted in
this 3-win result.
Way to go team.
Phil and Theresa Leahy and Pat

McClinchey added triples with a
double from Katie Stryker.
The Peterses earned two of the
outs in the third when Anthony
beat out the runner at first and Britt
caught a pop up.
Durie and Britt Peters added
homers in the bottom of the inning.
Good throws from Dale and Matt
Wilson to deBoer earned outs on
two separate plays.
As well as singles in the fourth,
Durie added a triple to his point
total.
The final score was 30-9 for
Blyth.
into the net.
Moving from Centerfield again,
Brussels took control of the ball
and moved it down field. After a
shot's deflection, Baillie struck the
ball again as it bounced from the
Palmerston goalie's hands. Not
being able to move fast enough, the
ball bounced between the goalie's
legs and into the net.
This left the final score at 5-3.
The players of Brussels B left
that evening feeling quite proud,
and are ready for their next game
this coming Wednesday.
Sharks, Panthers
play hot one
It was hot weather and hot action
when the Sharks and Panthers
played in Brussels, July 17.
The Sharks ran hard in the field
with every player giving their best
effort in this 6-4 victory. Morgan
Deitner and Taylor Prior joined the
short-staffed Sharks for this week's
contest.
Adrienna McDonald, Connor
Smith and Brenden Stretton helped
Ryan Smith score four goals, while
Alyssa Oldridge and Prior notched
one each.
Exceptional goaltending by
Alexandra McDonald helped hold
the Panthers to four. While this
team was also short players it didn't
stop their enthusiasm in the field,
Panthers Coach Kathy Huether
said. Robert Cronin, Nicholas Dur-
rel, Ray Huether, Megan Miners,
Alexandria Raynard, Kendra
Siebert and Melissa Stolz all helped
Matthew Huether score his four
points.
"It was a great team effort for the
Panthers," said the coach.
U-lOs lose
Tuesday evening, July 15 saw the
Brussels II - UlO's play host to the
Listowel Il's.
In the initial moments'of the
game, Brussels carried the play but
Listowel quickly turned the tide
and struck for an early goal.
Brussels defenders, particularly
the steady play of Peter Edgar and
Christopher Bernard, kept the
visitors from adding to their lead
until the game was three quarters
done. However, Listowel's
relentless attack and good
positional play finally paid off with
goals two and three.
Brussels briefly got back in the
game as Greg Bowers took the ball
the length of the field to score, but
hopes of a comeback were quickly
extinguished as Listowel potted
another one.
The final score was 4-1 in favour
of Listowel.
Belgrave Mites

Cook and Spencer Shaw combined
for the first out at first base.
Belgrave, who had earned two
runs in their first at-bat, look the
lead in the second, pushing five
across the plate. The attack was
aided by a homerun off the bat of
Procter.
Gowanstown regained their hold,
hitting for the maximum seven runs
and going ahead 10-7.
Belgrave was only able to score
twice more while allowing
Gowanstown to bring home nine.
Good defensive plays were made
by Cook, who stopped a grounder
then tossed to Procter for an out at
first.
Orrey Bromley turned a double
play single-handedly, scooping a
grounder and touching first for the
second out.

2 wins end season
for Blyth Atom I’s
This year, the Blyth Atom teams
were split into two teams, a
decision which at first caused a few
problems as each team had 12
players at the most. However, with
the assistance of some Squirts and
late registrants, the Division 1
squad started out the season with a
2-1 victory over Wingham
Wildcats with goals by Jamie Ross
and Justin Peters.
The team then had a series of ups
'and downs, shaking out who could
play best where but costing several
immediate losses. However, with
regular skill practices, Scott
McLellan becoming regular goalie,
and the addition of Mike DeWeerd
as centre forward, improved things
in mid-season, and in the last five
outings, the team lost one, tied one,
and won three, including two
shutouts for McLellan.
On July 9, the team hosted
Lucknow Lions with DeWeerd
getting two goals, one from a Ross
throw-in and one from a pass from
Darren Bouman, a squirt player.
Ross also scored twice, one a direct
return of a goal kick, and the other
assisted by Sid Slotegraaf. Matt
Bylsma also scored unassisted.
The last game on July 18, saw a

This was followed by a similar
