The Citizen, 1997-07-16, Page 11Brussels battles Belmore Matthew Kroll took the mound for the July 10 contest between the Brussels PeeWees and Belmore squad. A quick pop up, caught by Philip Leger, earned the first out, only to be followed by six runs before Sporting day Cranbrook 4-H members and their friends enjoyed a day of fun and frolic at Grey Central Public School as the club held a sports day for the achievement day activities. Leslie Baillie, a friend, took part in the wacky obstacle course while others played soccer-baseball and beachball-volleyball. Team 3 was the winner in the junior division and Team 2 took the senior title. U-lOs end home season on high The Brussels I U-10 team played their last home game superbly. Netminder, Tyler Jutzi stopped many shots and only let one past in the second half. He was given strong support from the full backs, Kyle Schlosser, Bradley Warwick, Mary Aitchinson, Baylie Thomas and Chase Chapman. Justin Mayne played a great game in centre by scoring the first goal in the game and just missing on a penalty kick by hitting the cross bar. Matt White and Chris Corbett from halfback position were able to kick one each past the Elma goal tender. The first half of the game was Brussels could shut their opponent down. Stepping to the plate, Bryce Wedow, smacked a pitch to centre, then stole third. Four balls put Mike Walker on first before a sacri­ fice fly-out by Leger brought played offensively for Brussels while the second half was more defensive action. Anyone missing the home games for this team has one more opportunity to see them play during the year-end tournament on Aug. 16 at the new soccer field. Belgrave PeeWees takes on Walton The Belgrave PeeWees boys slammed their opponents in the July 7 matchup against Walton. After pushing Devin Moffat across the plate in the first inning, Continued on page 12 Wedow home. A triple by Robbie McKercher sent Walker across the plate and put him in scoring posi­ tion for Matthew Elliott who sacri­ ficed. Belmore led 6-3 after one. Kroll helped the cause when he ran down a bunt for the first out in the second inning. Belmore later scored and loaded the bases before bringing in two more while the sec­ ond out tied up the Brussels players in a run-down. The final out in the inning came when Walker tagged out a Belmore player trying to get home on a bunt. Brussels drew within two runs in the bottom of the second. Morgan Bishop and Philip Wedow led off with walks. Bryce Wedow earned the RBI when Bishop came home on his hit. Kroll hit to third bring­ ing in Philip Wedow and setting up a two-runner homer hit by Walker. Brussels shut down the opposi­ tion in the third when Elliott got the first out at second on a force play, Kroll struck out number two and the third was gone on a pop up. The team failed to take advantage of the opening and were held off the board in the inning. Brussels let in four runs on short base hits and fly ball tag-ups. A strike out by Kroll and two big pop fly catches by Leger ended the inning. Belmore took the 13-7 win. Londesboro beats Bly th Hitting and base runners were the name of the game when the Bly th Tykes took to the diamond in Lon­ desboro, July 7. Kendall Whitfield started the slugging for Blyth when she knocked a double. Several singles followed. After a single by Adam deBoer in the top of the second, Colton Durie and Justin Ritchie struck with doubles. In the field, Durie made a nice play at third for an out and Erin Moore followed suit to earn an out at second. Quick action by Whitfield got a runner out at home in the bottom of the fourth, though a Londesboro homer brought in several more runs. Nick Dale and deBoer added doubles in the fifth with a triple for Ashlee Cook on overthrows. Durie ended Londesboro's attack in the final at-bat when he snagged a fly ball. Londesboro took the win 26-19. Panthers/Bears play to 6-1 end In Houseleague Soccer action, the Bears were home to the Panthers on Thursday, July 10. The Bears gave it their best, but the end result was 6-1 in favour of the Panthers. Randy Zwep, Gavin Bowers, Ty Sebastian, Morgan Deitner, and Emily Warwick all took their turn in net stopping some 'hard shots from the opposing Panthers. Taylor Prior had many clean shots but just could not manage to hit the net until near the end of the game, when he made an excellent goal. Danica Zwep, Thomas Johnston and Emily Prior all played well offensively and defensively which resulted in a hard fought game with lots of action. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, JULY lb, iyy/ haul 11. Look out below K member of the Brussels Bulldogs foul tips a pitch up over his head during a contest against the Brussels Tigers. The Tigers were victorious, 15-3. Tigers split weekend action The Brussels Tigers record is now five wins and six losses as they split weekend games with a win and loss in Huron County Fastball League action. Friday night the Tigers met the rival Bulldogs and came away with a convincing 15-3 victory over the Dogs. Once again Brussels counted runs in their first at bat. Singles by Tim Fritz and Ken Higgins were plated by a Shawn Conley homerun. The Dogs answered back with a run in the first as John Miners scored Dean Rutledge with a triple. The Tigers cashed three runs in the third on hits by Fritz, Murray Pipe, Higgins, Ron Strome, and a sac fly by Steve Fritz to lead by five. The Bulldogs plated two runs of their own on a Miners' hit and an Andrew McCutcheon ground out to make it 6-3 after three innings. After that it was all Tigers as they scored one in the fifth, then sent 12 men to the plate in the sixth and with it eight runs. Higgins, Pipe and Fritz all went three for five with Strome and Conley reaching base three times each. McCutcheon and Greg Mulvey U-12s take Brussels II U-12 soccer team set­ tled for a split when they took on Palmerston and Drayton this past week. Smart defensive play and good ball control kept the game very low scoring when Palmerston came to town July 7. With the two teams evenly matched, Tyler Campbell took advantage of a scramble in front of Palmerston’s net to rack up the only shared the pitching duties for the Dogs while Conley went all the way for the Tigers fanning nine Dogs. On Saturday night the Walton Brewers and Tigers hooked in a see-saw, high-scoring affair which, at game's end, had the Brewers come away with a hard-fought 8-7 victory. The Brewers pushed across a run in the top of the first as Terry Elligsen scored John Huethcr with the game's first run. Brussels came out swinging in their first at-bat scoring five runs. The key blows were two RBI hits by Strome and Doug Conley. The Brewers chipped away at the Brussels lead scoring one in the third and three in the third to tie the game at five. Brussels regained the lead as Strome and Fritz hit back- to-back triples and Brian Niell plated Strome with a single through to right side of the infield. Walton knotted the score again in the fourth with two runs, then scored the winning run in the sixth on a bloop triple by Steve Knight scoring Matt McNichol. Scott Leonhart went all the way for Walton striking out 14 while Doug and Shawn Conley combined to whiff only five Brewers. the split point of the game. It was a different story when the squad travelled to Drayton two days later. A very aggressive team beat Brussels to the ball on most occa­ sions, said Coach Randy White. Brussels goalies Matthew White and Jay Cochrane were bombarded with shots as Drayton overpowered the defense. The final was 10-0.
