THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, JULY 16,1997 Sports Up, down week for Squirt Girls Men bowl at Brussels greens It was an up and down week for the Belgrave Squirt Girls ball team when they went one for two. The squad travelled to Brussels for the July 7 game and met a tough opponent. Belgrave started the scoring in the second inning, tallying five, aided by homers from Kerri Meier and Nicole Proctor. Brussels would not be held back, scoring seven in retaliation. Belgrave evened up the score with two runs in the third only to see Brussels attain a 13-7 lead in the bottom half. Belgrave was unable to mount a comeback, scoring only one in their last at-bat. The result was much more to the squad's liking when they took on Ethel, at home, July 11. With Charlene Bromley on the mound, Ethel was held scoreless as she struck out one. Belgrave took advantage of the opportunity, putting two on the Mite Boys lose 2 Belgrave Mite Boys met strong competition last week as they suf fered two defeats at the hands of Ethel and Walton. Belgrave got on the board early in the July 9 match, when Orrey Bromley homered, but the defense could not hold off a powerful Ethel team. Though Darcey Cook earned an out by throwing to Spencer Shaw for the tag out at home and Kyle Procter threw to Zach Home for an out at first, Ethel scored the maximum seven runs. Shaw came home in the second for Belgrave's second run, but the home team scored another seven in the bottom of the inning. Down 14- 2, the squad began to make a come back, scoring three in the third when Bromley, Procter and Andrew Procter came home. Shutting down their opposition, Belgrave added two in the fourth from Cook and a homerun by Blyth loses, The Blyth PeeWees soccer team has a 1-1-2 record for the last month as they played in low-scor ing, tight games. They took a loss, June 18, against Clinton Cheetahs, going down 2-1. Emily Slotegraaf scored on a head shot, assisted by Jeremy Van Amersfoort off his comer kick. Meeting the Clinton Cosmos, June 25, Blyth took a first half lead when Justin Black scored twice. VanAmersfoort earned two assists with Jeremy Hanna, Melanie Bouman and Slotegraaf each aiding the scoring plays. Clinton tied the game in the sec score sheet when Bromley and Jenni Hopf came home. Ethel edged their way into the lead in the second off the pitching of Hopf when she walked three bat ters, all of whom eventually scored. With Ethel's pitcher having trou ble with the strike zone and the careful eye of Belgrave batters, six players took walks while Bromley smashed a triple. Seven runs were added. Kristen Palmer took the ball for Ethel's third at-bat, walking the first three before achieving two outs. Another base on balls and threes singles resulted in Ethel tal lying seven runs to bring the score to 10-9 in their favour. Belgrave recovered their lead with numerous walks and a single by Emily Elston to take the total to 15 runs. Ethel was able to score only two in their last at-bat, one a homer. The back-catching duo of Elston and Erin Sanders did a great job. Home. Cook earned four strikeouts on the mound for the third and fourth innings. Trevor Hopf made a good defen sive play for the third out of the third inning when he nabbed a grounder for the tag at first. Ethel doubled Belgrave 14-7. They took their second loss when Walton came to town the following night. The visitors jumped in front with five runs in the first and seven in the second before Belgrave scored. Determined, hard work by Steven ("Petey") McNichol and Mitch Blake paid off as they netted one each, helping Brussels gradually expand their lead. The Tigers clawed their way back, scoring one, but strong offensive play by Brussels half back Blake Griffiths helped to keep the ball out of further danger in the Newton zone. Justin Hubbert put the game out of reach, picking the comer from the lop of the penalty area and netting the fourth Brussels goal. The Brussels full backs played well throughout the game, minimizing the number of good Newton scoring chances. The final score was 4 - 1 in favour of Brussels. Pre-Mites lose The overpowering bats of the Gowans town team were too much for the Brussels PreMites when they came to town, July 10. The Brussels bats came around in the third and fourth, adding six more runs to the score.
