Scout gets top award Although weekly Scouting meetings are not being held during the summer months, there have still been some important Blyth Scouting events taking place. The Huron District camp at Benmiller was the highlight of the Scouting year for all sections, Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Venturers. It was held May 23-25. Huron District extends from Blyth to Ailsa Craig and includes Groups in Clinton, Goderich, Bayfield, Zurich, Hensail, Exeter, Grand Bend and Lucan. Youth, leaders and adult volunteers from all groups totalled over 200 at the camp. Tents were the order of the day. Crafts, games, campfires, fresh air, lots of food for hungry participants and a 25 km. hike for the more adventurous were enjoyed by all. On June 8, in Owen Sound, John Storey received his Chief Scout Award. This is the highest level of achievement for youth in the Scout section. Congratulations Joint! The presentation was made by Herb Pitts, National Commissioner for Scouts Canada, who congratu lated the youth for their accomplishments to this point, and challenged them to strive for even higher goals through their community involvement. The Huron District Basic Water Training Course was well attended by 1st Blyth. Scouters Shari Cartwright and Don Goodall and youth members Ross Clark and Derick Doerr participated in the course, while Lavern Clark and David Cartwright assisted with the training. Weather was ideal, and a lot of skills were learned, which will be used in turn to teach canoeing and safety skills, to the youth. The next anticipated event of the summer will be the Canadian Jamboree to be held in Thunder Bay, July 12 - 20. Local Scouts Ross Clark, and Robert Goodall are looking forward to the event with their Scout Leader Lavern Clark. They will be a part of a contingent of 62 youth and leaders from Huron District, and part of the 12,000 total from all across Canada. Blyth council briefs Beer tent gets okay After hearing a presentation from Mike McDonald of the Blyth Lions Club regarding the use of a beer tent during an upcoming ball tour hament, Blyth council passed a motion of acceptance at the June 24 meeting. The Lions Club asked to place a tent between the two diamonds, instead of in Lions Park due to a conflict with bookings. Council had no objections to the tent provided proof was given of $1,000,000 liquor liability insur ance. McDonald also asked council about the lining of the fields during a tournament. Clerk-Treasurer John Stewart said the diamonds are lined each morning of the tournament. Any further work can be hired out by the Lions or done by club mem bers, he said.
