For Teens, By Teens
JANN FLANDERS
Summer boredom
DEAR JANN FLANDERS,
My summer vacation is turning
out worse than the school year!
Almost all of my friends are out on
vacation, so I don't really have
much to do.
On the odd occasion that one of
my nearby friends is home and has
nothing to do, my parents are
leaving and I have to stay home
and babysit my annoying little
brother.
What can I do to fill time?
Bored in Brussels
DEAR BORED IN BRUSSELS,
Explain to your parents how you
feel. Two months without seeing
any other teenagers can seem long
and boring. You will probably find
them to be sympathetic.
If a friend is going to their
cottage for a week and asks you
along, don't whine because you
think your parents will say no. Ask
THIS WEEK S TOP 1 0

Everytime you hear the phrase,
"Could I have a couple of
volunteers?", do you catch yourself
groaning? Although there are some
volunteering jobs that are no fun at
all, there are plenty that are quite
enjoyable for you and they are fun.
From Paramount Canada’s
Wonderland to The Blyth Festival
almost every organization and
business has room for volunteers.
There are several reasons and
advantages to volunteer this
summer. Here is this week's top 10.
10) The time volunteering takes
up, means you miss watching
stupid summer TV re-runs.
9) You get to meet new people
and make new friends.
8) Volunteering can help you
decide what you want to do in the
future. If you hate your volunteer
job, chances are you shouldn't
look into it as a career.
7) If you work hard then you will
probably get a good reputation in
your community. This, in turn,
could mean a better chance of
getting a job in your area.
6) You get to spend time away
from your pesky family.
them. If they say no, find out why.
If they need someone to babysit
your brother one night, you could
offer to pay (or at least help) for
them to hire a different babysitter.
If they are concerned that your
housework won't get done, tell
them you'll not only have that done,
before you leave, but you could
even volunteer to do something you
don't usually do.
Another way to kill time during
the summer is to get a job.
Although most summer jobs have
been filled, there are always other
places (i.e. farms) that are in need
of help.
If you already have a job and are
still completely bored, try
volunteering. Since you said you're
in Brussels, a good place to
volunteer would be the Thrift Shop.
Have a busy summer!

5) You gel to help people out.
Also, you become less selfish and
more thoughtful towards others.
4) Businesses usually have
discounts for their employees.
Volunteers are also usually
entitled to these discounts.
3) It gives you something to do
rather than be bored at home.
2) You can add these volunteering
experiences onto your resume.
Future employers like to see them
and it just might give you an edge
over other applicants. You could
also add a reference onto your
resume, too.
1) It makes you feel good
knowing you do a good job and
that you are appreciated.

Movie review
Action flick gets nod
By Erin Roulston
Con Air is just one in a long line
of action films due out this
summer. Lost World, The Fifth
Element, Breakdown, Batman and
Robin, Men In Black, Face Off, the
list goes on and on.
But I must tell you that this
movie differs greatly from any
blockbuster action film I have ever
seen.
My expectations for this movie
were rather low. The reviews for it
were poor and I really wasn't in the
mood for yet another violent,
macho-"man" flick. But as I
watched this movie I found myself
completely absorbed in the film. I
cared about the characters, even the
bad ones, the murdering criminals.
Nicholas Cage plays "Poe" an
Army officer jailed for eight years
after killing a man in a drunken
brawl. While in jail, the only thing
that keeps him sane are letters from
his wife, and later the daughter that
he's never met. Finally the day
arrives when Poe gets paroled,
coincidentally enough on his
daughter's birthday.
Enter the airplane. In a scene
reminiscent of Top Gun, the
airplane comes out of the hanger,
directed by men in glowing vests,
while a voice-over explains The
purpose of the plane and this
particular flight. They are
populating a new super maximum
security prison with the world's
most psychotic and dangerous
criminals. Oh yeah, and Nicholas
Cage is coming along for the ride.
What a great set-up. I think -
Cage's character said it best:
somehow they managed to get the
craziest people in the world onto
this one flight, then they managed
to let these people take over the
flight, and then they managed to
put me in the middle of it!
I liked the originality of this film,
action scene after action scene, and,
other than one part very similar to a
scene from Outbreak, they were all
stunts, that I had never seen before,
like when he threw a body out of
the airplane which contained a
message to the police, and it landed
on the hood of an old couple's
Volvo. And you can't forget the car
with the licence plate "AZZ
KIKR." The whole audience
applauded at its fate.
The big scene at the end, the one
we've all seen on TV previews, the
one where the plane wing clips the
guitar on top of the Hard Rock
Cafe, then continues on down a Las
Vegas street, finally crashing into a
casino, is much more realistic than
special effects. When the director,
Jerry Bruckheimer found out that
the old DeSert Sands hotel was
scheduled for demolition, he
immediately moved the final
sequence from Washington to
Vegas (originally the plane was
supposed to crash into the White
House).
In one take they filmed the
airplane crashing into the hotel.
Well, two takes. On the first try the
rope pulling the plane towards the
hotel broke. The second try
worked.
Another thing I liked about this
movie was the psycho criminals.
John Malkovich plays Cyrus the
Virus, the man who heads up this
hijacking. In the first half of the
movie he is sort of likeable,
cracking jokes and sending out
witty insults like: to me you are
somewhere between a cockroach
and that crusty white stuff that
forms in the side of-your mouth
when you're really hungry.
- Well, the guy deserved it. Later
on in the movie he gets a lot
meaner. His plans don't really go as
he wanted.
There was another great criminal
who "makes the Manson family

look like the Partridge family", and
enters the movie in a straight
jacket, wearing one of those cool
masks that Anthony Hopkins wore
in Silence of the Lambs. Out of
respect for this "National
Treasure", the criminals take off his
restraints. This guy was one of my
favourite characters.
So, all in all I liked this movie,
right from the beginning with
Cage's terrible accent, to the
wonderfully cheesy end.
