Brussels B met the Palmerston team Wed., June 25 at the Palmer ston field to face off once again. After many close plays Brussels managed to hold Palmerston at a 2- 2 score. Early in the first half of the game, Brussels dominated the ball. Strong midfield play came from Leslie Baillie, who pushed the ball to the feet of Andrew Exel, who was playing forward. Keeping the ball from the Palmerston defenders Exel made a quick cross in front of the net to fellow forward Rolf Frischknecht, who controlled the ball on his head and then knocked it into the net. Palmerston kept up a strong fight however, and only a few minutes later managed to work around the U-8s win again Monday, June 23 at 7 p.m. in Howick proved to be an interesting and excellent soccer game for the Brussels III U-8s. Both teams were evenly matched. With many shots on both nets, defence players stood their ground, leaving it 0-0 for the first half. It was an outstanding perfor mance by goalkeeper Chelsey McLellan. After about five minutes into the second half Howick I, pulled forward to score their first goal. The game became exciting as parents and coaches cheered on. It was then that Bradley Hill turned around taking the ball from his opponent, scoring Brussels first goal, tying it 1-1. The pressure was on. Howick's defence made a slight error, allowing Brussels a comer kick. The ball was placed and Scott Somerville carefully lined it up and kicked it high and hard. It proceeded down the goal line, forcing Brussels centre, Marty Goetz, to stop it with his chest. It then ricocheted off the Howick goal post entering the net for Brussels to win the game 2-1. A fine job tending goal, for the second half was Shayne Cochrane. A great game played by all. Good work team. Everyone hopes Nicole's shoulder gets better. Squirts split action The Belgrave Squirt girls took a split on the week's games when they took on Gowanstown and Bel more. The team took to the field in Bel more, June 23, but were quickly down 4-2 after two innings. Belgrave drew within one when Michelle Cook blasted a homerun in the third. Belmore would not be held down, striking for three runs in their half. Though Belgrave made an attempt in the fourth, they were only able to put two runs on the board, leaving Belmore ahead 7-5. The home team added seven runs in the bottom of the inning. Gowanstown came to town, June 25, with much better results for the Belgrave team. After allowing three runs in the first, Belgrave came out strong, pushing seven home. Gowanstown continued to nibble at the lead, going ahead 10-8 mid way through the third. Buoyed by a homer from Kerri Meier, Belgrave struck for seven. When the visitors scored only two in their half of the fourth, Bel grave did not go to bat for the final half. Belgrave’s Michelle Cook popped a homerun in the first. The victory went to Belgrave with a 15-12 score. Great back catching by Meier, Erin Sanders and Sherri Ross added to the defense. Brussels defense and shoot high over the Brussels goalie Adam G amiss. Back at Centerfield, the Brussels forward line moved the ball quickly up the field. Phil Graber worked slickly around the Palmerston mid field line. The pass and go pattern served them well as Kirk Baillie, Terry Brown and Frischknecht took the ball all the way into the Palmerston goal area. Frischknecht took a quick shot as the defenders took attack, but the Palmerston team could not hold off, and Brussels took a 2-1 lead. After a quick half time the teams ' took to the field again. Frischknecht replaced Adam Garniss in net. The ball moved back and forth between teams, no one getting any real opportunities for goals. Managing to hold off the forward offense for most of the game, some Gowanstown blows away Belgrave A tough Gowanstown team stormed into Belgrave on June 26 and blew away their hosting Mite Boys squad 14-3. All three Belgrave runs were scored in a productive third inning. Despite the visitors scoring seven in the top of the inning, Belgrave had some stunning defensive plays as well, capped by Zach Horne's pop-fly catch at first. Pitching for the game were Kyle Procter with six strikeouts, Darcey Cook with three and Trevor Hopf with one. direct kicks were granted to the Palmerston team, helping push the ball further into the Brussels end. Garniss, Bronwyn Dunbar and Melissa Evans kept strong defense, but could not keep the Palmerston team back. With only a few minutes left the Palmerston forward line pushed the ball past the Brussels goalie, tying the game at 2-2. Both teams played strongly, fighting to see who could get the goal that would win the game in the next few minutes, but both teams came up short on chances and the game was left in a tied situation. The Brussels B's and Acre T teams will face off this Wednesday once again at the new field by the arena. U-10s just miss The Brussels I U-lOs played a strong game against Palmerston on June 24 which resulted in a 1-0 loss. Tyler Jutzi and Tate Stephenson took turns between the posts and did a great job, only letting one slip by.
