Blyth council continues fight By Janice Becker Citizen staff There was disappointment for Blyth Reeve Mason Bailey and Clerk-Treasurer John Stewart when they attended as Business Educa tion Tax Review Panel in London, June 11. The two expressed their feelings during a report to council, June 24, when they noted the poor turnout of elected representatives who attend ed the meeting to speak out on behalf of education tax reform for the commercial and industrial sec tor. Though Huron County was well represented with four, including the clerks of Exeter and Clinton, Stew art said Bailey was the only elected official to make a presentation to the panel. “I was disappointed there were not more elected people and staff there,” said Bailey, “but I am glad we went.” “Public apathy is one of the greatest challenges (we have) to let the people know what is happen ing,” said Councillor Doug Scrim- geour. Bailey said he was pleased with the open discussion allowed by the review panel and glad to hear there is some consideration being given to a different (tax) structure outside the Greater Toronto Area. “It will help, if they do it right,” he said. Blyth council is continuing its campaign to change the method in which education'taxes are collect ed. Presently, a portion of the tax has been removed from residential property owners, but has remained on commercial and industrial prop erty. Bailey’s presentation encouraged the government to continue to look for other methods to fund education other than through the collection of property tax, as education is not a service to property. Council continued to discuss the difficulties in keeping the commu nity informed of what is happening and what is needed “Until it hurts them enough, (people) won’t do anything,” said Councillor Rob Lawrie. “We have to keep them informed,” said Scrimgeour,” If they don’t do anything, we (still) did our job.” • Consumers are reluctant to sacrifice taste for healthier pro ducts.
