THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 25,1997 Blyth Tykes crush Colborne Blyth Tykes overpowered their hosting Colborne opponents to a 30-13 finish on June 17 in Ben- miller. In the first inning Blyth was off to a good start with six runs, high­ lighted by a Justin Ritchie triple. Erin Moore and Anthony Peters came up with some key defensive plays for the outs. A Britt Peters homerun was the big news in the second. Colton Durie had a good inning, offensive­ ly and defensively, crushing a dou­ ble, then with a quick pick-up and throw to Matt Wilson on first, elim­ inating a runner. The third inning was a Blyth hit parade, but Colborne answered with several of their own. Britt Peters made a great play, nabbing a runner at third for an out. It was two-times the fun as Katie Stryker, Nick Dale, Durie and Wil­ son all hit doubles in the fourth inning. In the bottom half, with a mighty lead, Blyth's Wilson tagged the runner going to second to end the game. On June 19, Blyth showed Bay- field they were there to play as they trounced their hosts 28-15. In their first inning, Blyth notched five runs, then Bayfield challenged in a big way with two home runs. In the second Blyth added seven more runs, while Bayfield added another homer. Defensively Ashlee Cook, made a great play to get a runner out on first, then nabbed a throw from Anthony Peters for a second out. Cook also nailed the third out with another great play at first. An Anthony Peters homerun set the tone for a solid third inning from Blyth, which was also high­ lighted by a Kendall Whitfield triple. Bayfield, in their at bat, responded with a single and dou­ bles before the final out. A Matt Wilson triple cashed in some more runs for Blyth at the top of the first. Then with Bayfield at the plate, Cook stopped a player trying for second, while Adam DeBoer nailed a play at first for another out. All’s fair 2 wins, 1 loss end busy week With a Newton Tiger seeing the game from a different viewpoint, a Brussels U-10 II player: gets in there to take the advantage. The Newton team came out on top in this one by 2-0. The game was in Brussels June 17. Newton shuts out U-lOs for Belgrave PeeWee Boys Two wins and a loss capped off a busy week for the Belgrave Pee­ Wee Boys recently. On June 16, Belmore came to town, only to have their hosts send them home on the losing side of a 9-6 contest. Scoring for the home squad were Curtis Knight, Matt Bromley, Matt Walker, Kent Readman, Chad Cook, Myron Hussey, Craig Marks, Jason Fear and Kent McPherson. The following night, Belgrave breezed into Auburn and blew away the competition by a score of 12-2. Auburn's runs were scored in the first and third. Belgrave didn't get started until the second, but look the lead at that point with two, scored by Readman and Knight. Marks widened the lead in the third, then Readman and Knight came through again in the fifth. Big sixth and seventh innings put the game way out of the Auburn team's reach. Crossing the plate for Belgrave were Bromley, Walker, McPherson, Readman, Knight, Cook and Hussey. It was a different story on June 22, when Ethel came to town and left with a 14-9 victory. It was anyone's game for a time as the teams traded runs for several innings. After a one-run Ethel fust Blyth Mites lose 11-6 The Blyth Mites came out on the short side of an 11-6 game in Holmesville, June 10. Josh Albrectas and Danny Cullen split the pitching duties for Blyth, while Kyle McNeil slammed a homerun in the first. Holmesville's defense proved to be the undoing of Blyth, with both teams hitting well. Coaches were pleased with the players' effort on a warm evening. inning, Knight came across to tie it. A one-run top and a one-run bot­ tom, with Travis Campbell coming home for Belgrave finished the scoring. The Brussels II - U10 soccer team travelled to Howick on Tuesday, June 10 for the second time in as many weeks and met the Howick II team. Brussels took the early lead on a On June 17, the Brussels II - UlOs hosted the Newton II squad. Newton struck early in the game with a well-placed shot from a scramble in front of the net. Neither team had another shot on net for goal by Greg Bowers after Some quite some time, as both teams excellent passing by several Brussels players. Howick evened the score, but Mitch Blake and Greg Bowers, with his second, each scored to give Brussels a two-goal advantage. Howick again put on the pressure and netted their second, but strong goaltending by Brussels "keepers" Eric Van Veen and Nathan Murray prevented any further scoring. The final score Was 3 - 2 in favour of Brussels. were evenly matched, with much of the play in this hard-fought contest taking place at centrefield. Brussels began to put on the pressure, led by the strong play of Mark Lefor at centre fullback and hard work by halfback Brett Hunt. However, Brussels was unable to penetrate a strong Newton defence.
