Belgrave Squirt Girls
win away, lose at home
On Thursday, June 12, the
Brussels Bears U-6 met the
Brussels U-6 Sharks. It was a close
game, ending up with a 6-5 victory
for the Sharks.
Starting in goal for the Bears was
Ty Sebastian who made a great
effort to keep the ball out of the
net. He played hard on the field as
Belgrave/Brussels Bantams beat Ethel
Solid pitching, good defense and
hot bats combined to give the Bel-
grave/Brussels Bantam Boys a 12-7
victory over a visiting Ethel squad,
June 11.
Starter Terry Nichol, with five
strikeouts, pitched three brilliant
shutout innings, backed by alert
defensive plays, to get the team off
to a good start.
Ethel had three runners on in the
first, with a walk to Tom Pearson, a
hit to Kosta Milinkovic and a sin
gle to Mark Gillis.
In the Belgrave/Brussels first,
Ryan Fear got on base, and after
stealing two bases, scored on a
Myron Hussey sacrifice.
The bottom half of the second
began with a lead-off walk to
Nathan Garland, who was later
thrown out at second. A single by
Jon Cucksey scored Kevin Hopf,
who had gotten on base with a dou
ble. Nichol's double brought Cuck
sey to third, for a Matt Cameron
sacrifice RBI.
The home team went up by eight
in the third. Back-to-back walks to
Fear and Tyler Bragg, resulted in
runs from stolen bases, clearing the
bags for Hussey's homerun blast.
Tom Pfeiffer got on board with a
single, stole second, then moved to
third on a sacrifice bunt by Joshua
Gropp. Pfeiffer stole home before
the third out.
Ethel's Jake Heibein got things
started for his team with a single
and a stolen second base. A nice
bunt by Steve Wideman put two
runners aboard and some heads-up
stealing brought them home before
the inning ended.
Belgrave/Brussels bats were still
hot in the bottom half with Cuck
sey slamming a double, then scor
ing on a Nichol double. Cameron
rounded out the scoring for the
well.
Trista Deitner knocked the ball
into the opponent's end, and she
also made some great saves on net.
Gavin Bowers had a good kickoff
and he ran hard chasing the ball to
the Sharks’ end.
Once again, Taylor Prior
displayed some excellent footwork,
inning.
The defense continued to plague
the tenacious Ethel squad with a
three-up, three-down fifth. In the
bottom half Marc Fischer came in
to pitch for Ethel's starter Jake
Heibein, giving up just one run. A
basehit put Pfeiffer on. Gropp was
put out on a sharp line drive to
short, which moved Pfeiffer to sec
ond. After a strikeout to the next
batter, an error put Hopf on first,
allowing Pfeiffer to score.
The home team got a little sloppy
in the sixth as walks and fielding
errors almost undid them. Base on
balls to Chad Fischer and Marc Fis
cher, then an error, put Craig Gillis
on base with an RBI. Chad Neville
was hit by a pitch, to load the
bases. A walk to Joe Pearson
brought one runner home.
After a stellar performance
Nichol came off the mound, hand
ing the ball to Matt McCall. After a
walk to Andy VanBeek, an error to
Jason Armstrong cost the team two
more runs.
After throwing out VanBeek, a
base hit was issued to Heibein. The
next batter struck out, then Steve
Wideman got on board. Before the
