HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 1997-06-18, Page 3Arena gets heating system The Blyth and District Community Centre is in the process of installing a new propane heating and air conditioning unit which will service the auditorium. Tenders had been called and the board awarded the contract to the lowest bidder, Conestoga Mechan ical, at a price of $38,375. The price also includes a dehumidifier which will be installed in the arena at a later date. The dehumidifier will alleviate the problem of moisture forming on the beams and causing them to rust. The new propane heating and air conditioning unit replaces the electric system which had become extremely expensive to operate. Engineer, Martin Stephenson from Integrated Engineering, has estimated that the new system will save the Blyth & District Community Centre Board $10,000 to $15,000 per year in energy costs. The board believes the new unit will be more cost efficient and save tax dollars. Also as municipal restructuring discussions intensify, it is the board's opinion that some arenas in Huron County may be forced to close. The board believes that the arenas which operate the most efficiently will have the best opportunity for survival and therefore the board's decision to upgrade the heating and cooling system. The board has also indicated that the new system will not be financed by increased taxes. Local service organizations are being asked to assist with fundraising to help cover the cost of the expenditure. Donations from individuals or groups will also be gratefully accepted and may be dropped off at the Village of Blyth Municipal Office. Additional information on the project may be obtained by contacting Board Chairman Bob Szusz or at the Village Municipal Office. Students get funds for trip Thanks to good community sup port, the Grade 8 class at Blyth Public School was able to raise the funds needed for their trip to Toronto. The class held bingos and a silent auction to help pay for the trip which took them to Black Creek Pioneer Village, Canada's Wonder land, a Blue Jays ball game and a performance of Phantom of the Opera. Students said the trip was very educational and enjoyable. A ride in the past These little visitors to the Blyth Fire Department’s Open House on Sunday were fascinated by the antique pumper, more than the new rescue van, which was to be the guest of honour. Firefighters served up hot dogs and sausage on a bun to their guests. Help protect the environment Reduce, reuse and recycle SHARP DEALS THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 18,1997 PAGE 3.
