Grade 9s become more self-aware
SELF-AWARENESS
PROGRAM
By Ryan Elliott
The Grade 9s look part in a Self
Awareness Program at F. E. Madill,
May 22 in the morning and May 29
in the afternoon.
A group in Huron Country called
Women Today offered our school
the program for Grade 9 girls. This
program was specifically meant for
the girls, but a second presenter
gave an alternative presentation for
the boys. These programs took
place in the two gyms with the
females in one and the males in the
other, with the help of the peer
mentors and peer mediators. The
females discussed self-esteem,
body image, and nutrition. The
males discussed anger management
and conflict resolutions.
The females' presentation was
more "hands on" work, making
crafts and food. The males was

more of a listening situation. When
I polled Mrs. Henke's Grade 9
French class, I found that the
females enjoyed the program more
than the males. I asked Mrs. Henke
if it was done again what would she
change, and she replied that she
would want some co-ed activities
and make it more confidential, to
encourage more participation.
STEVE CARTER
By Lisa Kwan
Steve Carter was awarded the
Margaret Bennett Junior
Citizenship Award by police chief
Jim Dore. Steve had helped save a
neighbour, Gord Walters.
The award was presented on May
26 at a school assembly at F. E.
Madill.
On Dec. 6, Carter was heading
home for lunch from shop class and
noticed a crowd. He went to look
what the situation was and was
called on to assist Dr. Antoni ados.
Walters had a heart attack and
Steve helped out by performing
CPR. Carter said that he fell good
about assisting in "saving" him.
Walters is a friend of the Carter
family and Carter said their
relationship has become closer
since the incident.
Carter said "CPR should be a
necessity for everyone, since you
don't know when you will need it".
There is a plaque located in the
school that reminds students and
staff what Carter has done. Steve
was also awarded his own personal
trophy and cash.
Carter is presently in Grade 10
attending F. E. Madill.
EDUCATION
By Robert Heimpel
Hundreds of adults are enrolled
in the Adult Education Program at
F. E. Madill Secondary School in
Wingham to receive their diplomas
or learn more about computers
every year. The Ministry of
Education and the Board of
Education run this program.
Anyone 18 or over is eligible to
take the program.

Billys". Billy is a favourite 10 year
old. He is caring, thoughtful and
compassionate, friendly to all he
meets. Billy is from a broken home.
His parent just lost his job. Billy
had to get a paper route to help pay
the bills.
"Do we have any Billys-in our
community or church? Rev.
Hawkins asked, "How do you treat
the Billys in your church?" There is
a song entitled We are a Family,
sung at Sunday services, but do
people really welcome Billy?
Rev. Hawkins used a beach ball
to represent Billy and passed Billy
through the congregation, watching
how people treated Billy. Most
people wanted to pass him on,
tossing him around. Is this how
Grade 10 to OAC. Everyone who
takes this program has an option of
doing the lessons out of a book or
going back to class like regular
students. If they choose to do the
lessons out of the book they are
able to work at their own pace.
Huron County is the only county
at the present time that allows
adults to have the options of using
the books to receive their high
school diplomas.
This program has a very high
success rale and anyone wanting to
get his/her diploma usually docs so.
