Jesus is Lord Guests Welcome By Bonnie Gropp Citizen staff A flooding problem raised a lot of questions and few answers at Brussels council, June 2. .John Pennington spoke to council regarding the flooding of his shop each spring. He said there has always been a water problem, but since the new ditch was put in behind his Princess St. property, it has worsened. He fell the situation might be helped if the water com ing from the east (Grey Twp.) could be better controlled. "I'm not crying the blues, but I don't like getting flooded." Pennington admitted that whoev er built the shop had built it too low, but said since neighbouring properties developed there has been an increase in the flooding. "It's not anyone's fault, it's just that every spring I have water in my shop. It is a concern to me. I'm not trying to knock anyone at the other end. I'm just trying to stick up for myself." Several suggestions were made, but there was an argument for each. Before Pennington left, council agreed that someone would look at it and see if a solution could be found. Later Councillor Greg Wilson said, "In my opinion there's nothing we can do. The water's got to run from east to west. We can't dam the end and the bottom line is you've got a building that's too low. There is no concrete answer with a low building. I'll try any suggestion, but guaranteed he'll be flooded again next spring." Councillor Joe Seili felt that try ing to dam the water at the top end as Pennington suggested was just going to cause problems in other areas. "I guarantee if we dam it, Gprd (Reeve Workman, who owns neighbouring property) is going to be back here after the first four inches of rain and he'll be coming in a boat." However, after some discussion it was felt this might be too costly for some thing that has no solution. "Every thing up there works fine," said Wilson. "We've just got a building that's too damn low." "And we can't afford to raise his building," said Seili. A decision was made to investi gate further, to see if an answer could be found.
