HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 1997-06-04, Page 11U-10II plays to tie On Tuesday, May 27 the Brussels II U-10 soccer team travelled to Palmerston for their second game of the season. Palmerston scored early but Brussels regrouped, tied the game, then scored again to take a 2-1 lead. They held their lead until late in the game when Palmerston evened the score, ending it in a 2-2 tie. Brussels players all worked hard and played well, led by Joel Hubbert's pin-point passing and a determined effort by Emily Cardiff. Brussels' goals were scored by Greg Bowers and Eric Van Veen. 2 U-16s get red-carded A rough game between the Brus­ sels U-16 and Drayton soccer teams, May 29, led to one player from each being red carded, fined and suspended for a game. Mike Cooper received the Brus­ sels penalty while Tom Green took the time out for Drayton. Richard Armstrong had a good game in goal for Brussels, allowing only two while his teammates scored four. Terry Nichol notched two and Mark Franken and Joel Kellington one each. Brussels U-16 plays Thursday evening on the new soccer field south of the arena. U-12 team tastes victory With teamwork improving as the season progresses, the Brussels I U- 12 squad captured a win against hometown Howick, May 28. Though they were unable to cash in on several scoring chances, the team managed to slip two by the opposing goalie while giving up only one. Brussels U-12 home games are played at Brussels Public School on Wednesdays. The winning team in the soccer match between the Brussels I and Brussels II U-12 teams was incor­ rectly reported in last week's issue of The Citizen. The Brussels I team was victorious. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 4,1997 PAGE 11. M. White leads team to win It was a win for Brussels I U-10 soccer team when Howick II came to town, May 27. With Tate Stephenson keeping the visitors out of the goal in the first half, Matt White scored two for Brussels. Howick came back strong in the second when Marley Duffield snuck two by goalie Justin Mayne. In the dying minutes of play, White booted his third one past the Howick goalie to give his team the win. Blyth was a great place for soccer fans this past weekend as enthusiasts competed in a tournament, sponsored by Blyth Christian Reformed Church (CRC) Young Peoples. There were seven teams playing, Blyth CRC, Blyth United, Auburn Missionary, Listowel CRC, Lucknow CRC, Vanastra CRC and Drayton. Drayton claimed the A title, while Blyth United won the B. Profits go to the Young Peoples Server Project, which is a one-week mission in Mississippi for six local youths. Hullett PeeWees trounce Vanastra The Hullett PeeWee Girls ball team got the season started with a hit parade in Londesboro on May 26. The club slugged its way to a 24-8 victory over Vanastra. Hullett struck early with an amazing nine runs in the first, while Vanastra also got off to a strong start with five of their own. The big jump came in the second with the home team shutting out the visitors in the top half, then scoring seven to spring ahead by 11. Vanastra brought three runners home in the third, but it was way too little, as Hullett played out the bottom half and added another eight. Big contributors to the home team's offensive onslaught were homerun hitters, Mandy Dunbar, with two, Becky Brandon and Lindsey Howitt. Splitting the pitching duties were Liz Ross and Leanne Jamieson. Other players on the team, coached by John Reinhart and Anj McCool, are: Tiffany Reinhart, Jody Godfrey, Mel Hiuser, Kristy James, Melissa Snell, Jenny Ritchie, Kristen Oster. Tops in their field Track and field day winners at Brussels Public School received their medals on Friday afternoon.
