It's clean up time in Brussels and
village councillors are losing
patience.
At the June 2 meeting, council
discussed problems with some
property owners who have been
asked to bring their property up to
standards. Clerk-Treasurer Donna
White said the feeling of council
was that they didn't want any place
in the village looking unkempt for
Homecoming weekend. Letters had
been written to several people,
which in many cases prompted
action, said White.
"Most people respect their neigh
bours enough to clean up when
asked."
However, there are some who
don't appear to be listening and
White said .that Chief Building
Official Paul Josling thinks there is
only one way to get a response and
that is to follow through to court.
"A lot of these properties have
been like this for a long time. It
will be an expense, but it's the only
way you're going to get these peo
ple to see you're not putting up with
this mess anymore," said White.
The guilty parties will be notified
of a public meeting in which the
list of problems on their property
will be itemized for them. If these
concerns are not corrected by a cer
tain date they will be taken to court,
where a judge will issue an order
for clean-up.
"Hopefully, it won't get that far,"
said Councillor Joe Seili.

Diabetic Group
meets at Huronlea
The BM & G Diabetic Group
met at Huronlea, May 21.
Nelva Scott welcomed everyone,
then read an amusing story. She
introduced Dr. Sean Edwards of
Seaforth. He spoke on a doctor's
perspective of diabetes. Evidence
of the disease, has been found in
mummies from BC. It is one of the
"best" chronic diseases, being
clean, seldom unsightly, not
contagious and susceptible to
treatment.
Seven to 10 per cent of
Canadians have diabetes and by
2004 it is estimated one in four
over age 45 will be affected, with
number two diabetes. Precautions
need to be taken, to prevent
complications such as, eye, heart
and kidney problems. It is the cause
of 50 per cent non-traumatic
amputations.
New treatments are being
developed and much more
information is available. Dr.
Edwards is excited by the
information on 'internet'. "Keep
Smiling" he advised.
He answered several questions
from the group. Mrs. Scott thanked
him and presented a gift.
On June 18 the group will have a
potluck dinner at Melville Church.
The Huron County Food supervisor
will give a demonstration on the
preparation of vegetables.
Annie, five dance and twirl teams, a
duet team as well as other local
talent.
The corps competes in three
competitions, Wingham, Walkerton
and St. Marys. For the first time
Wingham was represented in the
Miss Majorette of Canada
Competition held this past weekend
in Kitchener.
The Wingham Classics which
include Lesley Elliott, Heather
Hall, Lori Bridge and Heather
Sande received first in the Senior
Small Division.
"The Flashy Five" which
includes Jennifer McDonald.
Rachel Elliott, Jennifer Hall,
Jessica King and Amy Ross
