Cranbrook 4-Hers take sporting chance Chairman of the 140th Grey Twp. anniversary committee, Bob Cunningham, centre, and Reeve Leona Armstrong, present Grey Central School principal, Paul Statia with a plaque showing appreciation to the students and staff for their assistance in making the June 28, 29, 30, 1996 celebration a success. The school facilities were used during the event for ball games and as part of the reunion. Students also decorated and displayed historical items. In accepting the plaque, Statia said, "From our point of view we tried to be as helpful as possible in making the weekend a success." By Sarah McLellan The first meeting of "A Sporting Chance" was held at Grey Central School on Saturday, May 17 by the Cranbrook 4-Hers. This club is designed to get all members inter ested and involved with different sports. The meeting began with a game in which all members were given two or three slips of paper that had the names of different sports and athletes on them. The object was to match the sport with the athlete who plays that sport. When you found the person who was your match, you had to introduce them to the rest of the members. Next, the club's executive was elected. They are: president, Jen Terpstra; vice-president, Jill Speiran; secretary, Christina DeWitt; press reporter, Sarah McLellan. After the elections, we were briefed about what we will be doing in this club. We were then divided into "teaching teams" which will each be responsible for one of the remaining three meetings. Each "teaching team" consists of an organizer, an official, two coaches, and two trainers, who each haVe a part in their meeting. The teaching teams also picked which sports they would like to do at their meeting. Following this was a presentation on nutrition by the two youth leaders in the club, Julie Terpstra and Lisa Blake. During this informative presentation, we’were each given a hand-out to complete on the topic, and we played dodge ball with a nutritional twist in that if you were hit, you had to answer a question on nutrition. The last major part of the meeting was to go outside to play "Flags" and "King's Court Dodge Ball" which were the games of choice for the "teaching team". When we were done playing games, we worked in our "teaching teams" again until the meeting was closed. The group will be travelling to Art gallery The work of St. Thomas painter, Andres Villar, will be featured when the Blyth Festival Art Gallery Committee commences its 22nd season Friday, June 20. The Bain ton Gallery atmosphere will be quiet and thrilling as it is transformed by Villar's dynamic landscape paint ings characterized by bold, broad Sports World on Friday, July 4. Everyone is asked to note that on Saturday, July 12, the Cranbrook 4-H club will be holding an invitational tournament as part of their achievement program. Anyone interested in submitting a team of eight or finding out more information should contact Amy Cronin or Angela Terpstra. Beginning with the reciting of the 4-H pledge, meeting two of "A Sporting Chance" was held at Grey Central School by the Cranbrook 4-Her's on Saturday, May 24. Following the pledge, any member who brought title pages to the meeting was asked to put them on display, and, by show of hands, they voted for the one which we liked on display, and, by show of hands, they voted for the one which we liked the best. The title page which received the most votes was that of Sarah McLellan. Next, the floor was opened for suggestions for the club name. When there were no more suggestions, they voted by secret ballot and their name for this club is the "Cranbrook Cross Trainers". The next part of the meeting was the roll call. This week's roll call was "What is the most important qualification for a coach?" There was no one correct answer, but some of the good ones were being supportive and teaching skills. On that note, they then completed a quiz which was designed to tell whether their coaching style would be oriented towards development, fun, or winning. After, members did a series of activities intended to give them an idea which sports they might be interested in. This was done through finding things like flexibility, lung capacity, static balance, dynamic balance, explosive power, landing ability, convergent vision, and heart rate. Finally, when they finished the activities, they went outside to play soccer. The next meeting will be held on Saturday, June 7 at 3 p.m. season set strokes. The viewer's eyes will be challenged as they move from his serene fields to powerful waterfalls to dazzling starry night scenes. Villar himself will be present for the opening ceremonies which begin at 4:45 p.m., prior to the Gala Dinner and Opening of Quiet in the Continued on page 27 Doon Heritage hosts car show On Sunday, June 15, 1997, the Central Region of the Historical Automobile Society of Canada will be holding its annual Invitational Car Show at Doon Heritage Cross roads from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Over 100 antique cars, trucks, street rods, custom and classic automobiles dated 1977 and older STRICKLAND TOYOTA, GODERICH STRICKLAND TOYOTA, GODERICH 1993 ALTIMA GXE Sharp one owner.
