The Grade 7/8 class presented
The Mikado. Nanki-Poo, son of the
Mikado and heir to the throne of
Japan, has run away to escape the
romantic advances of Katisha, an
elderly lady of his father's court.
Disguised as a wandering minstrel,
Nanki-Poo has coipe to the town of
Titipu in search of Yum Yum, a
young woman he had met a year
before and with whom he had
fallen hopelessly in love. Much to
his dismay, he had learned that
Yum Yum was engaged to marry
Ko-Ko, a tailor.
Now a year later, Nanki-Poo
learns that Ko-Ko has been
condemned to death for flirting.
But, the Mikado has suspended the
sentence and appointed him Lord
High Executioner of Titipu, the
city's highest office, under the
condition that he either cut off his
own head or find someone else to
behead in his place.
Meanwhile, Nanki-Poo has
vowed to kill himself because he
cannot marry Yum Yum. He is
about to hang himself from a
willow tree when Ko-Ko convinces
him to be beheaded instead, in
grand style. Nanki-Poo agrees
under the condition that he be
allowed to wed Yum Yum one
month before his executive.
Next, it is revealed that according
to an ancient law, when a married
man is beheaded, his wife must be
buried alive. Yum Yum, of course,
balks at the idea. Disgusted, Nanki-
Poo renews his previous vow of
suicide, which upsets Ko-Ko,
because if Nanki-Poo kills himself
then Ko-Ko, must be beheaded
since his substitute will no longer
be available.
Nanki-Poo then tries to persuade
Ko-Ko to execute him on the spot,
but Ko-Ko doesn't have the nerve.
Immediately, Ko-Ko gets the bright
idea to falsify a death certificate
and just in time for the Mikado and
Katisha are entering the city.
Since the Mikado had previously
suspended Ko-Ko's death sentence,
he is naturally curious to know if
the trade-off execution has taken
place. Ko-Ko produces the falsified
death certificate, which Katisha
reads, only to learn that it was
Nanki-Poo who was beheaded. Ko-
Ko leams Nanki-Poo's true identity,
and the punishment for decapitating
the hew apparent, to be immersed
in boiling oil or molten lead Nanki-
Poo convinces Ko-Ko to woo
Katisha, or to face the
consequences. Ko-Ko wins
Katisha, Nanki-Poo wins Yum-
Yum, the Mikado is satisfied and
all ends happily.
