THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, MAY 28,1997 Tigers drop to 1 win, 2 losses The Brussels Tigers dropped their record to one win and two losses with two losses this week. On Tuesday the Tigers travelled to Walton to face the Brewers and came up on the short end of a 7-4 score. Walton scored two runs in the first to take the lead, but the Tigers scored two in the fourth and fifth to lead 4-2. Walton tied it in their half of the fifth and went ahead to stay with three runs in the sixth. Ken Higgins was two for four for the Tigers. Shawn Conley and Doug Conley shared pitching duties for Brussels, while Scott Lienhardt went all the way for Walton. On Friday night, a short-staffed Tigers squad took the field against the Seaforth Reds and were trounced 12-3. Seaforth opened the scoring in their half of the first. The Tigers quickly replied in the bottom the inning on an RBI single by D. Conley, scoring Murray Pipe. Tykes play slugfest Close It was a slugfest when the Blyth Tykes hit the diamond in Londes- boro, May 21. Blyth got off to a good start, cashing in seven runs in the first, on the strength of a Kendall Whit­ field triple. Londesboro fought back, scoring three in the bottom of the inning. Ashlee Cook blasted a homerun, helping Blyth add nine in the sec­ ond. The third was an exciting inning. Katie Stryker made a good play al first to get the runner out. A couple fly balls were near misses for Justin Peters and Justin Ritchie as was a quick throw from Ritchie, to Katie McClinchey on first, almost earn­ ing an out. Whitfield and Colton Durie each slugged homers in the fourth. A nice play from Brittney Peters to Ritchie, nabbing a player on first brought the game to a close. The final tally was 31-11 for Blyth. From then on it was all Reds. Brussels did manage two runs in their final at bat on an RBI by Doug Shaw and D. Conley. The next action for the Tigers is Wednesday in Seaforth and Friday at home against the Brussels Bulldogs. Mite teams keep it close Brussels Mite Boys and Girls played their first game of the year against Belgrave. Both teams were evenly matched, with Brussels coming out ahead in the end. "Both teams should do fine this year in the area of pitching, as there were few wild pitches," said Coach Duane Gibson. "All the kids have obviously been practising hard and are keen for a good year." The finale score was 14 - 10. This year's roster includes Amber Sellers, Claire Mastnak, Philip Wedow, Brent Wheeler, Scott Philips, Mitch Ortman, Jamie and Jacob Crosby, Kyle and Shane Gibson, Steven Ropp and Chris Ulman. Blyth Mite Nick Stryker just misses this one during the game last week against Bayfield. The home squad showed no mercy trouncing their visitors 16-1. Madill athletes win gold Mites down Bayfield In spite of the cool weather, the Blyth Mites ball team was ready to take on Bayfield, May 22. Good pitching from Josh Albrechtas and Danny Cullen, con­ sistent catching from Nick Stryker and attentive participation by all outfielders made for a strong defense. Kyle McNeil made a great pop fly catch at first with Lisa Root and Emily Urquhardt playing eagerly at several positions. Homers were struck by Albrech­ tas. (two), McNeil (two), and Cullen. Additional RBIs were earned by Stryker (two), Brittany Cook (two), Angela Nonkes (two), Kaitlyn Toll, Jenna Rinn, Eric Caldwell and Jimmy Ritchie. Blyth captured a 16-1 victory. Thunder storms Wingham The Blyth Thunder PeeWee soccei team played host to the Wingham Bullets on May 14 for the season opener. The game got underway with lots of enthusiasm. It was a close match but Blyth prevailed and came out on top with a 4-0 shutout. Blyth's first goal was credited to Ashley Howson. Melanie Bouman picked up the throw in from Jeremy VanAmersfoort and passed it to Luke Slotegraaf who gave it to Howson. The second of the night was on a corner kick by Van Amersfoort who placed the ball nicely on Justin Black's foot who quickly beat the keeper. The third of the game was set up by Howson and after a it of a scramble, Joy Cullen placed it between the pipes. Slotegraaf finished the scoring of the night with Blyth's fourth goal. Black drew the assist. The Blyth Thunders' second game was against the other Blyth team. This game was a little unevenly matched as the Lightning was missing four players. Darwin Buffinga got the Lightning's lone goal. Goal scorers for Thunder were Jenny Jackson, one; Slotegraaf, three; VanAmersfoort, three. Assists went to Bouman, Cullen, VanAmersfoort and Slotegraaf. The next Lightning game will be on Wednesday, May 28 at home at 7:15 p.m. The next Thunder game will be on Wednesday, June 4 in Goderich at 7:15 at the high school field. Brussels II downs I It was a home-at-home contest when the Brussels I U-12 team met the Brussels II U-12 squad. May 21. Filling the visitors' role, Brussels II captured a 4-0 win on the strength of goals by Alvin McLel­ lan, Adam Cochrane, Joel Heming­ way and Patrick Rushton. Hemingway and Troy Backhaus shared the goaltending duties. The teams played well,.’getting the season off to an excellent start. The F.E. Madill Mustangs competed in an exciting WOSSA track and field championship in London this week. In a very competitive field of track and field athletes, the Madill team captured 21 medals (eight gold, five silver, eight bronze). In the process athletes shattered eight school records, set one new WOSSA record and qualified in 22 events to compete in OFSAA Regionals in Brantford next weekend. Andy Shaw was powerful out of the blocks and led the field in the 100 m ambulatory race. His U-6 teams play in season opener It was the first game of a new season for a new soccer division in Brussels. Two housleague U-6 squads, the Bears and Sharks, took to the field, May 20, to leam how to play soc­ cer. It was the first time for most of the players, said Bears Coach Rita Bowers, and by the end of the game, everyone knew to run towards their opponent's net. "The kids did really well, made a great effort and had a lot of fun," she said. It was also very entertain­ ing for the parents, spectators and coaches alike. Taylor Prior scored for the Bears and Westin McLeod kicked one over the line for the Sharks. U-lOs tie An exciting season opener saw Brussels II U-10 soccer team take on Brussels I, May 20. Both teams worked very hard, ending the contest in a 1-1 tie. Tyler Jutzi bulged the twine in the first half, putting Brussels 1 in the lead. Greg Bowers answered for Brus­ sels II, slipping one by the goalie in the second half. winning time of 13.0 seconds was a personal best and became the new WOSSA record. Josh Sparks became an individual Midget Boys WOSSA champion by'winning three gold medals in the 100, 200 and long jump. His clockings of 11.6 and 24.0 also broke existing school records.
