The Citizen, 1997-05-21, Page 14Ethel girl embarks on mission to China CHRISTINE KNORR By Janice Becker Citizen staff The simplest act of one person caring for another and taking an interest in them has put a young lady from Ethel on the road to China. Christine Knorr, the 20-year-old daughter of Alice and Clayton Knorr, will be spending eight weeks in Mongolia taking the gospel to the "unreached" and teaching English to secondary school teachers. Knorr first met representatives from Pioneers, an interdenomina tional Christian mission based in Florida, during a career day last fall at Emmanuel Bible College in Kitchener-Waterloo, where she attends. Of the many mission groups which were in attendance, Knorr says it was the Pioneer people in whom she was interested. "They took an interest in me. They were very nice. They prayed for me, saying God will take me where he wants me to go. They cared enough to pray for me and take interest," says Knorr. Knorr will be leaving June 16 to spend two or three days in Florida to meet the other five teammates who will be travelling to the Orient with her. Though she will have little for mal training from Pioneer, she has been given books to read covering the history and religion of the area to make the adaptation easier. Knorr has also been working on learning the Mandarin language, the native tongue of the northwest China and Mongolia. For her part, Knorr has had to raise $4,175 to fund her travels. "The Brussels Mennonite Fel lowship has held fundraisers (bringing in $1,200) and when I was at school, envelopes with money would just show up in my mailbox," says Knorr. "The envelops would always come at a time when I was thinking I would not raise enough. God would make sure more was there." Though she is nearing her fundraising goal, Knorr still has $1,800 to go. Anyone wising to assist may mail a cheque to Box 220 Dorchester Ontario, N0L 1G0, made payable to Pioneers. On a separate piece of paper, state the money is for Christine Knorr, account number 71659, as well as the donor's name and address so a tax receipt may be issued. McMahon, PRO Clara Gibson, Fordwich WI president, bade everyone a welcome for the 95th Huron East District Annual events. There were 99 registered for the day. Convenors of Public Relations, Tweedsmuir, Program-Coordinator and Resolutions had 100 per cent reporting. There weren't any resolutions drafted this year. Marion Johnston, Gorrie, conducted the In Memoriam and had each branch stand that had lost a member in the past year, as she placed a white carnation in a vase of red roses. Kathy Bridge gave the 4-H report from the Leaders' Association. Members will now be paying a $10 fee. 4-H needs funding and no longer has all the Institute support it once received. Winnifred Mann, board director subdivision 11 presented a lot of information from the spring board meeting. A suggested project after Safe and Healthy Communities is the Community Abuse Program of Rural Ontario in conjunction with the Farm Women's Network. A move towards eradication of abuse can perhaps be made through awareness, teen esteem and elderly support. There have been 55,703 knitted squares sent to Zambia. A president-elect for FWIO is needed for November board. Nine points of restructuring were noted and each branch is to discuss these recommendations and have their secretary send a reply to the board director. The material for the WI tartan is available at $60 per metre. Orders are to be made through Nelda Morrisonn., 1-905-562-0567. "The Pros and Cons of the Internet on Society" is the new essay topic for scholarship applicants. The WI booth at the Royal Winter Fair in November will continue.
