Mine happened the other day when I was involved in a car-truck accident. My car lost! Fortunately, both the farmer and myself were not killed. After the initial relief that both of us were alive, the next concern was mopping up the damage with the expert help of the police, local firefighters and ambulance crew. A special thank you to all of you who stopped and offered your help. Wake-up calls like this car accident focus our thoughts on the 'what if s' in life. 'What if I wouldn't have been so fortunate and I would have been killed in the accident? What would happen to my family? Would they be able to carry on financially? Do I have enough life insurance? Do I have a will? Is it current? Do I have all my paperwork in order so my executor could take care of my assets? 'What if I would have been severely injured and in hospital unable to take care of my finances? Do I have a 'power of attorney' who could step in and look after my finances until I recovered? Life Insurance A wise person once told me to think of life insurance as 'income' insurance. If I was to die, my family would continue to need my income to pay for their living expenses. How much life insurance do I need to replace my income? Of course, term insurance is the cheapest kind of life insurance, especially when we are younger. So, to determine the amount of life insurance needed on the life of the 'breadwinner' in the family, we need to calculate the amount of money it would require to replace the breadwinner's wages. Also, if there are young children in the family, the 'housemom' needs to have sufficient life insurance coverage to replace her services with a nanny and housekeeper. It is important to cover this expense in order for the breadwinner to continue working at their job. Wills Wills are legal documents that give instructions to our executors as to how we wish our assets to be taken care of after we die. It is best to have a lawyer's help to advise us of our choices and the laws which may affect our decisions. The executor(s) needs to be chosen with care as this is a demanding role which may involve selling real estate, investments, etc. and working with other professionals, such as lawyers and accountants. Special consideration needs to be taken if young children are involved. A guardian should be named to take care of them and instructions given as to the investments set up to cover their needs. Power of Attorney This is a legal document that names the person(s) who will take care of our finances if we are unable to do so because of a car accident, illness or absence such as a cruise around the world. This document gives the chosen person the power to pay our bills, sell our real estate, handle our investments, etc. Obviously, we need to take care in whom we select to be our 'power of attorney' as this person literally takes over our finances when we are unable to do so ourselves. The 'power of attorney’ also now has authority to make medical decisions on our behalf, so it is really important to choose this person with great care. It is easy for us in our very busy lives to put off these important insurance and legal matters. But, we never know when we are going to get that next wake-up call. So, STOP and take the time to put your insurance and legal documents in order. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, MAY 14,1997 PAGE 11. Cranbrook WMS meets at Smiths’ The WMS met on May 6 at the home of Mrs. Joe Smith with eight members in attendance. Leader for the meeting was Mrs. Jack Knight who honoured mothers with her selections. The opening poem had a spring flavour with the name "Have You Ever", which led directly into the opening hymn For The Beauty of the Earth. The scripture reading was taken from Deuteronomy, chapter 5, verse 6. Honour thy father and thy mother as the Lord thy God hath commanded thee. Commenting on the scripture certain family virtues must be instilled in youth. Parents are responsible for showing good moral ways of living and for teaching their children to respect each other and themselves. Hymn 585 Happy the Home When God is There was read in unison. The Lord's Prayer was repeated in unison. Cards and visits to shut-ins for the month showed a total of 12 visits and cards. Mrs. Stuart Stevenson informed members of a sight-seeing trip to the training grounds of the Presbyterian ministers in Toronto. Visitors are to visit Knox College, Wynford Drive and Evangel Hall. Mrs. Murray Crawford gave further insight into the colourful land of Hong Kong which is a mixture of the west and east. Tagged as the "Manhattan of Asia", it had a record of 11.4 million visitors last year and tourism is booming again. Many of the textile manufacturers have moved their businesses to China where production costs are not as high. It is to be hoped that the communist take over on July 1 will be stable and advantageous for Hong Kong. For those who wish to be at the changeover ceremonies to watch the Queen's representatives sail into the sunset, it is difficult to find an airline seat from anywhere in the world. This portion closed with the Mizpah benediction repeated in unison. Following the missionary meeting the ladies made extensive plans for the salad supper to be held in the Cranbrook Hall on Thursday, June 5. A delicious lunch was served by Mrs. Knight and the hostess, Mrs. Smith.
