Familiar face joins staff at Brussels PS Returning After an absence of a few years former Brussels Public School teacher Howie Morton of Belgrave is back — this time in the principal's chair. Scratch ’n Dent Sale New Wood's Freezers By Bonnie Gropp Citizen staff With just less than two months remaining in the school year, the students at Brussels are welcoming a new principal, Howie Morton. Former principal, Dave Kemp, who is retiring at the end of this term, is currently working on a multi-media history CD for the board. Coming into a school as its principal at the end of a year, has been "a highly desirable situation" for both educators," says Morton. "In addition to giving Dave an opportunity to finish his project before retirement, it is an opportu nity for me to come in and get to know the school and community." Morton is not a complete stranger, however. After beginning his career 28 years ago, teaching first at Carlton Place, his first full- time position for Huron County was at Brussels Public School in 1977, under principal Ken Scott. He left in 1981. During those years he taught Grades 4 and 7 and spent time as the School Resource and library teacher. After leaving Brussels he went to Wingham Public School where he spent eight years before going to Clinton. Morton's leadership focus has been on social skills development and conflict resolution. While it is an issue that may not be a problem at this school, Morton says he believes that children need to be taught social skills, how to solve problems and manage their anger. Recently, he has been promoting a program Second Step Violence Prevention and has been involved in training others to teach it. "Kids have a tendency to react. There are things they can learn that will save them a lot of anxiety as they grow up.” The program educates children about empathy skills, on how to wood’s We also have a selection of used re-conditioned ranges Starting at 25°° • various sizes excellent working condition excellent price Starting at *249°° OLDFIELD PRO HARDWARE & RADIO SHACK ® RadioShack Brussels 519-887-6851 ggO identify problems, how to get con trol of their anger, leam to come up with several solutions to problems then evaluate which is the safest, fairest, and least harmful one. The next step is to take a look at how the solution is working. "It’s a two-minute course that takes all year to deliver." Morton says the children's cur riculum for the course is pre-school to Grade 10. To introduce the kit that would take students from Early Years to Grade 8, which would be the decision of the staff and Student Advisory Council, would cost, Morton says, $1,600. It can, how ever be done in groups. East Wawanosh Public School's primary students are involved in the project, which has the full support of Huron County Board of Education super intendents. A parent kit is also available. Morton resides in Belgrave with his wife Judy, who is also a teach er. The couple has two children, Heather, who works at the Factory Theatre in Toronto and Ian, a stu dent at Wilfred Laurier University in Waterloo.
