Uniqueness, motto for new Blyth business By Janice Becker Citizen staff Uniqueness is the motto for Huron County’s newest country store in Blyth. From the smells of all-natural soaps, specialty oils and vinegars to the colourful designs of decoupage lamps, handmade dolls, ornaments and sweaters, Olde Village Accents has a touch of country and Victori an decor for everyone. Bev Elliott will open the doors to her newly-renovated gift and decor shop, May 8, on Queen Street in Blyth. Having been a shopowner at the same location for a few years before she sold her business in 1989, Elliott says she was waiting for the opportunity to start again. Retired from a position with the Huron County Board of Education, Elliott says she missed the interac tion with the public. When Christmas and Country ceased operation in December, Elliott seized the chance. Renovations on the building, which she has owned for approxi mately 15 years, began in January. The work included removing the old drop ceiling to reveal an origi nal tin ceiling in very good condi tion. The walls were also redone to capture that Victorian feel. As well as shopping at major gift and craft shows for inventory, Elliott, family and staff have con tributed many of the handmade items to the shop. “I wanted something unique and constantly changing,” she says. “Each item (made by Elliott or family) is an original. When a cus tomer comes in the next time, there will be a different selection of pieces.” For her part, Elliott creates beau tiful decoupage lamps, checker board tables, toll painting, handmade wooden dolls and deco rated sweaters. Her daughter-in- law, Anne Elliott, contributes watermelon birdhouses to the excit ing mix of objects while employee Nancy Hakkers makes the dresses for the wooden dolls. “She is quite the seamstress,” says Elliott. The accessories available at Olde Village Accents extend beyond the wall hangings, twig wreaths and candles. Elliott has decorated the shop with antique furniture and will offer a selection of wine racks, Blyth agrees to pay ed tax increase By Janice Becker Citizen staff In the continuing battle over edu cation taxes, Blyth council set the mill rate for 1997, at the May 5 meeting. Though consideration was given to withholding the education tax from the Huron County board of education, councillors agreed the increase would have to be included on the tax bill. ‘We have to charge the increased rate (3.05 per cent) or we will pay later,” said Councillor Rob Lawrie. The increase amounts to approxi mately $16,000, he said, so some thing would have to be cut from the budget or it has to be passed on. Reeve Mason Bailey agreed that if this were not the last year the Continued on page 25 They could be the perfect accent to the sunroom or covered patio. The uniqueness of this item is that it is bought as a kit, to be assembled by the family crafter. It even comes with a help line num ber for those less experienced in the field. “It would be perfect for Father’s Day,” says Elliott.
