Blyth UCW celebrates 35th
Planting for the future
Students from Blyth Public School had a morning out of
the classroom, April 29, to plant trees for the Blyth
Greenway project. Devon Shannon, left, packs the ground
while Chris Hill ensures all the roots are covered.
Blyth seniors pary with Belgrave
The Blyth Swinging Seniors held
their meeting on April 23 at 1 p.m.
for a dessert euchre. They had as
their guests the Belgrave Seniors
with a very good attendance.
Following the dessert a short
meeting was held.
President Lawrence Plaetzer
opened with O Canada with Phyllis
Boak at the piano. The usual
reports were given and birthdays
and anniversaries were observed
for Alice Nicholson, Gord Bosman
from Belgrave and Feme
McDowell and Lenora Davidson
from Blyth and Kay Rich from
Belgrave.
Isabelle Craig then introduced
Bob Heywood from Exeter. He is
an auctioneer from that area. He
sang and played his piano
accordion. He sang gospel, country
and folk songs. These were much
enjoyed by all.
Following this Lawrence Plaetzer
read a humorous poem. Jean
Nethery gave an update on the June
23 bus trip. It will be into Bruce
and Huron County with several
stops including the Pine River
Cheese House, the Gingerbread
Doll House in Wroxeter, toy tractor
collection and Lismore Sheep
Farm. The cost is $50 per person
and both meals are included. If
possible bring money to next
meeting on May 28.
Also anyone interested in the
Senior Games phone Isabelle
Craig.
This closed the meeting and
members played euchre and lost
heir. Winners were: high lady,

Sunday was a special day in the
life of Blyth United Church as its
UCW celebrated its 25th
anniversary.
Greeters were Rick and Susan
Howson and the ushers were
Kathy, Kandice, Sarah McNichol
and Debbie Root. Donna and Erin
Moore were in the nursery.
Emily Phillips, president, opened
the service with the call to worship,
Rev. Huntley led the singing of I
am a New Creation. Phillips
proceeded with a prayer followed
by the announcements.
Special recognition was given to
Joanne Bauman, Nancy Kramer,
president of Huron Perth UCW and
Rev. Cecil Wittich. Glory be to
God the Father was sung followed
by the chorus anthem White as
Snow with Michael Duthie at the
piano.
After the children's hymn When
Mothers of Salem, Emily spoke to
the children about the generosity of
the women in the UCW, recounting
humorous events. The hymn Make
a Joyful Noise to the Lord was
sung.
Scripture readings from the Old
Testament: Genesis 2: 18-23 were
given by Lenora Davidson and
from the New Testament: Luke 14:
25-33 by Brenda Brooks.
Howson introduced the guest
speaker, Sharon Wittich. Sharon
and her husband, Cecil, served this
church from 1970 - 1982. They
now reside in Kitchener. Wittich
delivered a challenging and
thought-provoking message titled
"Risk and Rejoice". She gave as
examples three women from the
Old Testament, Jochebed, Ruth and
Ester, who after taking a risk
rejoiced at the outcome.
From the New Testament she
cited three times in Mary's life, as
Jesus' birth mother, at the
crucifixion and at the tomb where
taking a risk ended in rejoicing.
Wittich challenged everyone to
take risks for good, to give spiritual
guidance to the children whose
lives they touch and to use money
and material possessions for good.
In this way, she said, their lives
will end in rejoicing.
She urged everyone to leave the
church confident and to "Risk and
Rejoice".
Howson thanked Wittich for an
inspiring message and presented
her with a bouquet of pink
carnations. Jesus Calls Us was
sung. Rev. Huntley led in a Litany
of Renewed Commitment.
Faye Bolger and Kathy
McNichol received the offering.
Loma Fraser gave the Minute for
Missions. This was followed by the
Prayer of Dedication.
