THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, MAY 7, 1997 Huronlea Happenings Geri-Fashions brings shopping to residents Someone had a brainwave some years ago when he said to himself, "It’s a dam shame there's hundreds of people in nursing homes who can't get out to shop. They still need clothing, but maybe special types of clothes. It would be a smart idea to find out what's needed, and take the shop to them, since they can't go to the shop!" So Geri-Fashions was born and a The scoop for pooch owners By Bonnie Gropp Citizen staff Some thoughtless dog owners are going to pay if Brussels council and the animal control officer have anything to say about it. At the May 5 meeting of council Clerk-Treasurer Donna White said that there had been complaints about dog owners who are not using pooper scoopers. There is a $50 administration charge if a per son is caught not cleaning up after their dog. "I know it's terrible," said White. "I don't know why people have to walk up this main street and let their dogs go right on the side walk." Reeve Gord Workman said the problem was bad as well at the Maitland Valley Conservation Park. "I know of at least seven peo ple who take their dogs there to let them go." ACO Bob Trick has placed posters in the village telling people of the fee and that there is not warning given. Council decided to run an ad in the newspaper as well. "You would think people would have enough common sense," said White. "Just let Bob catch a few," said Councillor Ralph Watson. "It will get better." Council also asked that Trick continue to question any people he sees walking their dogs on whether or not they have a pooper-scooper with them. 9 tables at euchre On Monday, approximately 50 people attended a delicious casserole dinner sponsored by the Majestic Women's Institute. They do a pretty good business, their prices are reasonable and the quality is good. The Fordwich-Gorrie Seniors catered to the monthly birthday party with the music of the toe tapping variety, jokes and a delicious assortment of goodies. We all sang Happy Birthday to Jack Wheeler and Bertha Harrington. We also honoured Tim Dilworth and Jack McCutcheon, two apartment dwellers who had April birthdays. Thursday saw a number up early to get breakfast over in order to be ready to leave at 9:30 for Belmore. Since it was to be at least three in the afternoon before they returned I decided not to go because that was too long for me to go without lying down. I asked several who went what they did and found out that they had pancakes drenched in genuine fresh maple syrup and farm fresh sausage at the Belmore Maple Syrup Festival, an annual event which features live entertainment, a craft fair and lecture on the process of making maple syrup from medieval times when a tree was tapped by a shallow notch in the tree trunk with a wooden spile. April 14, the Activation Departments, Huronlea and Huronview, under the capable direction of Ann Brabender, planned entertainment to honour the many volunteers whose efforts we so much appreciate. Quite a good number came to be served with wine, tea or coffee, or a non-' alcoholic punch, plus an assortment of cheeses with fancy crackers as well as sweet California grapes, followed by luscious cake buried in whipped cream over a layer of strawberry or raspberry jam. Before the cake there was a program led by the group Audibly Awesome based in Clinton. They harmonized on six or eight old favourites. Ann made a short welcoming speech and said a few words of thanks to volunteers and introduce the president of the Huronview Resident's Council Gordon MacDowell. Ann next introduced a prominent member of Huronview resident's council, Mildred Warwicks, who is a dear friend and former roommate of Edna Evers who is, of course the treasurer of Huronlea's resident’s council. Mildred talked about the school children who come and entertain on a one-to-one basis taking people for walks or playing board games, or crokinole cards or checkers. Some of them take great pleasure in just talking to an elderly person asking questions about what it was like 'in the olden days'. These children will sit for hours as someone tells how it used to be way back in the days, "When you and I were young Maggie". Suddenly, it was my turn. Since I am president of Huronlea's Resident’s Council, I, along with Edna Evers, am supposed to give a short laudatory address. I knew I was there for that purpose, had even written a speech, and memorized it. I swallowed nervously, my mind a total blank.
