They came from Bluevale, Brussels, Blyth, Dublin, Ethel and Winthrop and Walton. Helpers and teachers came from Bluevale, Brussels, Walton and Ethel United churches. As a member of the Twin City Spinners, Jason Shortreed of McKillop Twp. earned a gold medal at the Canadian Junior Wheelchair Basketball Championship in Kitchener, April 18-20. Shortreed scored once in the 78-50 victory. Athlete brings home gold On April 18-20, Jason Shortreed participated in the Canadian Junior Wheelchair Basketball Champi­ onship in Kitchener. Jason's a member of the Twin City Spinners, who have managed to hold their gold medal title for the third year in a row. The team they defeated this year was the Quebec Gladiators. A group of women from Blyth and Walton area took a tour Lon­ don way this past week. Lone hand winner for the men was Alvin McDonald and Vera McDonald took the prize for the Continued on page 24 Earth Day was celebrated this week by having four people from Greenpeace come and do a puppet play about endangered species. After the play the Grade Is drew pictures of some of the Canadian endangered species like the Beluga whale (in the St. Lawrence River), the grizzly and the whooping crane. The children were encouraged by the Greenpeace people to send the pictures to the government. Further Earth Day activities included the class making earth scenes showing different parts of the environment; eg. ponds, forests and then the creatures that are found at these places. These were done on styrofoam trays. Duff’s plans country supper Doreen Hackwell greeted worshippers on April 27 at Duffs United Church. After the Call to Worship, the Introit was sung, followed by the Prayer of Approach and the singing of The Lord's Prayer. Rev. James Murray announced that the Country Supper Smorgasbord will be May 19. They set up their stores and using their play money a lot of interesting items were sold. The hottest selling items that went for $ 1,000 were cars and hockey cards. The class gave Mrs. Wilson some cards, posters and candy. The Early Years students worked on the number eight. They had fun making figure eight buns and of course the best part was eating them. They also learned about the letter everyone to sing Happy Birthday. Applause followed after Mr. Craig stood up and took a bow. Rev. Murray called the young people forward and showed them a globe. He told them that the Christian faith is world wide. He asked them some trivia questions such as - What is the most common language spoken by Christians in the world today? It is Spanish. Which country has the biggest church (numbers)? South Korea has a church with one million members. It has five services a day. For Mrs. Wilson they made a book that told her that they liked her, they really liked her and they loved her and they especially liked her hair. Earth Day was celebrated in Grade 3/4 class by watching a movie called, 'Environmental Health'. They are also doing independent research on animals in North America. Mrs. Crocker showed her appreciation for the secretary by taking her out to lunch. people joining the church today? The answer is Africa. What was the first language used by Christians?
