Church has Missions celebration
"Getting there is half the fun - if
one flies," were the opening words
of Huron Chapel's annual Missions
Celebration. The theme, "On
Wings To The World," was
determined by the fact that the
missionaries speaking at the first
service on Sunday, March 13, serve
under Missionary Aviation
Fellowship. Brad and Maureen
Fretz have ministered for 10 years
in Angola and Tanzania.
When the curtains opened in the
darkened auditorium and the
coloured platform lights came up,
Brad Fretz could be seen sitting in
an aeroplane which had been
constructed for the occasion.
Behind him flashing lights outlined
the runway.
As a monologue over the PA
system, complete with the sounds
of an accelerating aeroplane,
described Brad's ministry, a huge
model plane was launched from the
rear of the auditorium, over the
heads of the congregation, and was
intended to land on the platform. It
fell somewhat short of its goal,
howeVer, and dived
unceremoniously onto the head of a
startled parishioner.
Faith promise commitments to
Missions, received in that service
amounted to $7,574.
Jeff Bleijerveld, missionary to
Spain, arrived in the same plane for
the Sunday evening service. To the
sound of typical bull-fight music,
he was challenged by a rampaging
bull, charging down the aisle. He
leaped out of the plane, doffed his
coat, and daunted the animal,
played by Paul Buttar and Brian
Walden. Further faith promise
pledges were received, making a
total of $45,674.13.
On Monday evening a work team
to the Dominican Republic and the
two teams to Mexico gave verbal
reports and showed a video of
constructing a church in Uriangato,
Mexico, during the Spring break in
March. Further pledges of
$8,336.38 were received, making
the total $54,010.51.
When the curtain opened for the
Tuesday evening service, the
congregation was confronted by the
Great Wall of China. At the
appropriate place during the taped
monologue which described their
