Mitchell to honour hometown legend With the coming of spring all Scouting sections turn their attention to a variety of outdoor activities, while Group Committee turns its attention to the need to raise funds to support such activities. In Scouting the transition of the older youth from one section to the next is called 'Swim-up'. This year Group Committee would like to have a family barbecue in May for all 1st Blyth Scouting youths and their families. Major fundraising activities planned before the end of the Scouting year include Scoutrees, to be planted sometime in April, the Rover Chili Supper April 28, and the annual Bake Sale and Bottle Drive on May 3. Add to that camps and hikes, canoeing and environmental clean-up, and it will be a busy last two months for Scouting. For Scouts and Rovers there are plans for summer activities as well. Ross Clark and Robert Goodall will be joining thousands of Scouts from across Canada at the Canadian Jamboree in Thunder Bay. Rovers will be planning a wilderness canoeing-camping excursion. For the 1997-1998 Scouting year more leaders will be required, especially in Cubs (youth 8-10 years old). Registration numbers are up in 1st Blyth Scouting. In order to make it possible for all youth to continue to enjoy the benefits of Scouting more help must be found. Scouting is as much for the adults as it is for the youth. Training is available. Experienced Scouters are there to coach, and Scouting can be a lot of fun. Ask any of the leaders involved, or Barb Knox, chairperson of the Group Committee, 523-4290. • The two main nutritional concerns of Canadians are fat content and cholesterol level. The footings have been poured for the first new Town of Mitchell entrance sign at the eastern end of this midwestern Ontario sports town. Spurred by the Howie Morenz Memorial Committee, four new entrance signs will be erected - at a total cost of $44,000 - signifying that Morenz was native to Mitchell. The Mitchell Meteor was bom in Mitchell on Sept. 21, 1902 and became one of the early National Hockey League (NHL) legends of the game. He was picked by the Canadian Press as the greatest hockey player in the first half of this century. - A special banquet and awards night has been planned for Friday, June 13 at the Mitchell and District Community Centre, at which time the committee, in conjunction with Mitchell Minor Sports, will announce their most outstanding minor hockey player. But after working diligently on the award, the committee felt that new entrance signs would be the next step to honouring Mitchell's native son, and after receiving town council's blessing (and a $10,000 loan), have been working behind the scenes to erect the first sign. At least one sign will be Moose tag deadline nears The Ministry of Natural Resources reminds moose hunters they have a little less than a month to apply for this year's Adult Moose Validation Tag Draw. Fundraising has also begun, with many corporate and private donations received. More is still needed, obviously, with tax receipts available if desired. A major fundraiser - four tickets to see an NHL game in Montreal between the Canadiens and the Toronto Maple Leafs next season, plus two nights' accommodation and train tickets - is also underway, with the grand prize winner to be announced the night of the banquet. As for the banquet itself, former Montreal Canadien Bernie 'Boom Boom' Geoffrion and his wife Marlene, the daughter of Morenz, have confirmed their attendance, as has Howie Morenz, Jr. Tickets for that special evening, held in conjunction with the Mitchell Bruce Sawyer Female and Male Athlete of the Year awards, will be $30 each. Tickets for the fundraiser are $20 each. Also of note, the banquet will be emceed by London radio personality Jim Van Home.
