It could be a dangerous manoeuvre when more than half a dozen high-powered motocross
machines hit the first curve after the starting gate, but skill and experience brought thrills
and excitement to the spectators gathered at Auburn Hills Raceway, April 26 and 27 for the
event. Brett Lee, number 60, of Walton, took the high road to avoid the crowd during his
Youth/Vet Master race.

With the coming of spring all
Scouting sections turn their
attention to a variety of outdoor
activities, while Group Committee
turns its attention to the need to

about how to wrap up lite current
Scouting year, as well as preparing
for the next. In Scouting the
transition of the older youth from
one section to the next is called
'Swim-up'. This year Group
Committee would like to have a
family barbecue in May for all 1st
Blyth Scouting youths and their
families.
Major fundraising activities
planned before the end of the
Scouting year include Scoutrees, to
be planted sometime in April, the
Rover Chili Supper April 28, and
the annual Bake Sale and Bottle
Drive on May 3. Add to that camps
and hikes, canoeing and
environmental clean-up, and it will
be a busy last two months for
Scouting.
For Scouts and Rovers there are
plans for summer activities as well.
Ross Clark and Robert Goodall will
be joining thousands of Scouts
from across Canada at the
Canadian Jamboree in Thunder
Bay. Rovers will be planning a
wilderness canoeing-camping
excursion.
For the 1997-1998 Scouting year
more leaders will be required,
especially in Cubs (youth 8-10
years old). Registration numbers
are up in 1st Blyth Scouting. In
order to make it possible for all
youth to continue to enjoy the
benefits of Scouting more help
must be found. Scouting is as much
for the adults as it is for the youth.
Training is available. Experienced
Scouters are there to coach, and
Scouting can be a lot of fun.

or Barb Knox, chairperson of the
Group Committee, 523-4290.

Spurred by the Howie Morenz

A special banquet and awards
night has been planned for Friday,

Community Centre, at which time
the committee, in conjunction with
Mitchell Minor Sports, will
announce their most outstanding
minor hockey player.
But after working diligently on
the award, the committee felt that
new entrance signs would be the
next step to honouring Mitchell's
native son, and after receiving town
council's blessing (and a $10,000
loan), have been working behind
the scenes to erect the first sign.

Fundraising has also begun, with
many corporate and private
donations received. More is still
needed, obviously, with tax receipts
available if desired.
A major fundraiser - four tickets
to see an NHL game in Montreal
between the Canadiens and the
Toronto Maple Leafs next season,
plus two nights' accommodation
and train tickets - is also underway,
with the grand prize winner to be
announced the night of the banquet.
As for the banquet itself, former

Marlene, the daughter of Morenz,
have confirmed their attendance, as
has Howie Morenz, Jr.
Tickets for that special evening,
held in conjunction with the

will be $30 each. Tickets for the
