On Wednesday, April 16, over
200 women teachers, Jbus drivers,
custodians, secretaries and
educational assistants employed by
the Huron County Board of
Education met together at the
Huron Women Teachers'
Association Annual Charter of
Rights Banquet and Auction.
The event, held at Stanley
Township Community Centre,
commemorates the anniversary of
the inclusion of women into the
Canadian Charter of Rights in the
mid 1980s.
The Federation's first Charter of
Rights Banquet in Huron began
approximately 10 years ago, at
which time the Huron Women
Teachers' Association honoured the
occasion by presenting a $250
cheque to what was then called
Survival Through Friendship
House. A long association with the
shelter began, and within a few
years the dinner had expanded to an
annual auction encompassing all
female employees of the board and
earning over $4,000 per year.
Michele Hansen, director of the
consigned by Robert Meier,

$62.78 with sales to $66. One
Black cow consigned by Brian
Black, Goderich, weighing 950 lbs.

There were 21 bulls on offer

shelter recognized this long-term
commitment Wednesday evening
and Susan Pye, chair of the board
of the women's shelter and
counselling services Huron,
presented Willi Laurie, president of
the Women Teachers' Association
with a plaque honouring the long
time partnership between the two
organizations.
Laurie noted that as teachers and
education workers, all those present
were very aware of the hurt, shame
and learning difficulties children
suffer as a result of abusive home
situations. She compared the effect
of an abusive environment to a
domino fan where one child's
experience expands to other
generations, other people and other
students.
After entertainment by Betty
Jinks and her partner, Al Alderson,
silent, loonie and bidding auctions
were run by Nancy McKeon, Status
of Women convenor for the
Association and by Wendy Case,
auctioneer and Huron County
secondary school teacher. All of the
items, ranging from handmade
wooden furniture, bird feeders and

for $75.50.
There were 330 veal on offer
selling: Beef, $80 to $115;
Holstein, $70 to $85; and Plain

average of $87.71 with sales to
needlework to maple syrup, theatre

donated by schools, by trustees and
by board administration.
In addition to the funds raised by
the Huron Women Teachers in the
auctions, Florence Keillor, second
vice-president of the provincial
organization, FWTAO, also
presented Michele Hansen with a
cheque for $400.
Hansen took the opportunity to
announce two initiatives of SWAN
- a women's partnership group in
Huron. One fundraiser being
planned was a "Celebrating Women
Dinner" to be held in Holmesville
on May 10. Hansen also announced
the release of a new compact disc,
"Heartbeat". Recorded entirely in
Huron County, this is a compilation
of music by various Huron County
female artists. Copies of the CD
will be sold at the next Huron
Women Teachers' Association
Banquet on May 29.
The Huron Women Teachers'
Association also supports the Take
Back the Night March in
September and the Dec. 6 National
Day of Remembrance.

You know dealers used to fill
your tank if they let it run dry!
By this time I had decided to
switch to Union Gas. The gas men
were prompt installing gas to the
house.
The furnace man said I'd likely
bum up a lot of oil before he could
come and put in a gas furnace
instead of him pumping it out and
giving it away! I told him when it
was down and, behold, the second
time oil wouldn't come out; so he
gave the tank a kick and it flowed
again. He said he'd be here, if he
got done at Atwood on Tuesday.
Well, Tuesday, Wednesday,
Thursday passed and Friday, a
helper came in the morning. When
I went downstairs he said, he
wouldn't be there for Friday
afternoon. I started up the cellar
steps and fell backwards and broke
my elbow. If their people had been
punctual I wouldn't be spending
since Jan. 31 in the hospital.
The joys and woes of a hospital
are many! When they x-ray, they
fling your arms around like a dead
rat. They couldn't operate for two
long days in London. Then therapy

began. I was taken by ambulance to
the original hospital, and also to
another to find blood clots.
One thing, they have good food
in the hospital. The men orderlies
are great. One fixes bobbie pins
and is a real hair dresser.
Twice I got somebody else's tray,
another time brown bread and
sometimes no menu.
My doctor went to Europe for a
holiday and one doctor didn't come
to see me for ten days. The nurses
knew my trouble; I asked for
another doctor and she wasn't even
told. What kind of administration is
this? No one should say, "It's under
the bridge!"
Some nurses are very good. One
guardian angel had me put in a
lounge chair at night. One therapist
borrowed by walker for a minute
and kept it a half hour, and me
needing it. She said, "Next week
you'll be using one without
wheels."
I use a Saan bag for exercise and
one nurse wouldn't give it time
because I'd awaken the other
sleepers in the room. Another gave
me pills with the bathroom waler,
and we were told not to drink that
(soft maybe).
