The event, held at Stanley Township Community Centre, commemorates the anniversary of the inclusion of women into the Canadian Charter of Rights in the mid 1980s. The Federation's first Charter of Rights Banquet in Huron began approximately 10 years ago, at which time the Huron Women Teachers' Association honoured the occasion by presenting a $250 cheque to what was then called Survival Through Friendship House. Laurie noted that as teachers and education workers, all those present were very aware of the hurt, shame and learning difficulties children suffer as a result of abusive home situations. She compared the effect of an abusive environment to a domino fan where one child's experience expands to other generations, other people and other students. By this time I had decided to switch to Union Gas. The gas men were prompt installing gas to the house. The furnace man said I'd likely bum up a lot of oil before he could come and put in a gas furnace instead of him pumping it out and giving it away! I told him when it was down and, behold, the second time oil wouldn't come out; so he gave the tank a kick and it flowed again. He said he'd be here, if he got done at Atwood on Tuesday. Well, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday passed and Friday, a helper came in the morning. When I went downstairs he said, he wouldn't be there for Friday afternoon. I started up the cellar steps and fell backwards and broke my elbow. If their people had been punctual I wouldn't be spending since Jan. 31 in the hospital. The joys and woes of a hospital are many! When they x-ray, they fling your arms around like a dead rat. They couldn't operate for two long days in London. The men orderlies are great. One fixes bobbie pins and is a real hair dresser. Twice I got somebody else's tray, another time brown bread and sometimes no menu. My doctor went to Europe for a holiday and one doctor didn't come to see me for ten days. The nurses knew my trouble; I asked for another doctor and she wasn't even told. What kind of administration is this? No one should say, "It's under the bridge!" Some nurses are very good. One guardian angel had me put in a lounge chair at night. One therapist borrowed by walker for a minute and kept it a half hour, and me needing it. She said, "Next week you'll be using one without wheels." I use a Saan bag for exercise and one nurse wouldn't give it time because I'd awaken the other sleepers in the room. Another gave me pills with the bathroom waler, and we were told not to drink that (soft maybe).
