The Citizen, 1997-04-23, Page 27Top school achievers speak to WI members A good attendance was present for the Women's Institute annual meeting on Tuesday evening, April 15. Audrey Fenton, president, welcomed everyone. She led in the WI opening exercises and grace with Mary Coultes providing the piano accompaniment. Following a delicious potluck dinner, Kay Roberts, convenor for the meeting, introduced and welcomed the guest speakers. These were the convenors of the public speaking and science fair competitions held recently at the East Wawanosh Public School. Kristyn Gerth was the first speaker. She chose as her topic "Mystery Melt". She explained how snow is more acidic near the ground level than the surface snow. This, she said was because the pollutants become more concen trated in the deeper snow after the levels of snow had melted a number of times. Danielle Delong chose "Speeches" as her topic. She explained how she pondered on what theme to choose for her speech and finally decided to address the subject of speeches itself. Garret Knight spoke on "Aerodynamics". He explained how the shapes of paper airplanes affected their performance. Tim Jerva then spoke on "Optical Illusion". He demonstrated how many things are not always as they appear. The final speaker was Heather Black who spoke on "The Effects of Temperature on Seed Germin ation". Heather's display showed the seeds during the various stages of their development. All the speeches were very well received and each speaker was given a token of appreciation. During the business part of the meeting the minutes of the March meeting were read by Secretary/ Treasurer, Diana Robinson, who also gave the treasurer's report. Both were approved and adopted. She then read the correspondence and matters arriving from the correspondence were dealt with. The program convenor's report and nominations reports were given by Norma Moore, who moved their adoptions. The election and installation of officers followed with Mrs. Marjorie Anderson, district president, being the installation officer. The payment of membership dues for the year was the roll call for the meeting. A period of discussion concerning future WI activities followed with a list of dates being handed to each member by the secretary. The meeting closed with the singing of "The Queen". 48 residents gather for euchre games The seniors bowling scores for April 16 were: Jim Coultes, 119, 164, 117; Raymond Neil, 131, 92, 118; Lome Campbell, 180, 159, 187; Ken Saxton, 148, 126, 181; George Michie, 139, 99, 108; Al Meyer, 102, 121, 93; Judy Gaunt, 126, 151; Jean Walker, 92, 115; Laura Johnston, 122, 124; Largaret Mclnnes, 193, 126; Annie Cook, 95, 88; Ivy Cloakey, 104, 125; Mabel Wheeler, 94, 136.
