Once again the annual Huron
County Science Fair was an
unqualified success. Ninety-one
students from Grades 7 and 8,
representing the Huron County
Public and the Huron-Perth Separ
ate School Boards of Education and
the Clinton and District Christian
School, displayed 69 projects at the
Goderich Knights of Columbus
Centre on Wednesday, April 9.
The projects examined
everything from the flexibility of

Champion ice carver teaches
World and six time U.S. National
Ice Carving Champion, Mark
Daukas of Costa Mesa, California
was at Iceculture Inc., Hensail, last
week where he conducted an
intensive 45-hour, hands-on
advanced ice carving course for
chefs and others involved in the
hospitality industry.
Ten students from as far away as
Britain, Ottawa and Northern
Ontario registered for three
different sessions - New American
Ice Sculpture (the use of power
tools); The Mark Daukas snow-
filled logo technique; Carving
Faces and Human Anatomy.
Students worked inside the 65 x
30 ft. custom-built Iceculture
freezer which is equipped with
work benches and power outlets.
They also attended classroom
sessions to learn ice carving
theories, how to modify power
tools for ice carving, see slide
presentations and learn to mold
human faces in clay.
Daukas pioneered the use of
power tools for ice carving and a
measure of his success as a sculptor
is reflected in the results of national
and international competition.
Mark has won 46 of the 52
competition events that he has
entered.
Daukas is a much sought after
sculptor, speaker and teacher who
has motivated over 500 beginner,
intermediate and advanced carvers
from North America's finest hotels
and clubs. He conducts seminars
and demonstrations throughout
North America and has a client list
of prestigious corporations, clubs
and celebrities - including the Ritz
Carlton, Elizabeth Taylor, Mel Gib
son, Mercedes Benz and Universal
Pictures. Daukas sculpted a set of
Disney caricatures for Elizabeth
situations. Judges had a very tough
time making the final decision as to
which three of the top notch
contenders would represent our
county at the Canada-Wide Science
Fair in early May.
The judges' final decision named
David Lisle and Duane Schiestel,
both Grade 8 students from
Wingham Public School, and
Curtis McNeil from Colborne
Central Public School, as the three
winners. These three students will
show their projects against similar
Taylor's well publicized Disney
land birthday. His Hensall stop was
the only course scheduled for
Canada this year.
Daukas represented the United
States in the Lillyhammer Winter
Olympics and was awarded the
highest honour. The list of Daukas'
awards and titles is long. In 1989
he became not only the first
American to win the World
Championship, but the first
American ever to triumph over the

The winners of the raffle will be

Organizers of the Huron County
Science Fair were encouraged by
the level of projects at the fair this
year. They believe that this is an
indication of the quality of science
education that the students in this
county receive in the local schools.
In the past two years, the winners
at the Huron County Science Fair
have won three silver and two
bronze medals at the Canada-Wide
Science Fair. It is felt that this
year's winners will do equally well.

On Monday, April 7, our Grade
6, 7 and 8 classes had a Family
Science Night. There were projects
that varied from paper airplanes, to
crystals, to meteorites. It turned out
very well. The students, teachers,
and parents all enjoyed it very
much.
Eight students recently started an
Enrichment Art Workshop - Alexis
Patch, Kelly White, Lauren Hoegy,
Jessica Spink, Justine King,
Brooklyn Wheeler, Jenna Krotz
and Buck Duclos attended. They
were taught about primary,
secondary, and tertiary colours, and
they made colour wheels.
This course is taught by Mrs.
Humphries of Walton. Four
students will be chosen to go to
East Wawanosh. At East
Wawanosh, a few students will be
chosen to go on a tour of three Art
Studios in Ontario.
Kindergarten registration is on
Wednesday. There are 28 students
signed up already.
Courtney Sallows, and Nicole
Mastnak are organizing a talent
show to be held on either April 30
or May 2. The auditions for this
show will be held on the week of
April 21. A lot of people are
signing up, but we still need more.
We would like to give a special
thanks to Courtney, and Nicole.
You're doing a great job.
This year there will be a skipping
demo team. This team will consist
of Grade 5, 6 and 7 students. They
are hoping that the demo team will
get students interested in skipping,
especially for Jump Rope For
Heart, which is approaching
.quickly. The demo team will be
helping students in the primary
.grades to learn to skip and teach
them tricks.

a presentation on the Titanic. In
preparation, the Grade 8s have
recently read a historical fiction
novel, called SOS Titanic. We were
amazed at how much true
information was in the historical
novel. We also learned some of the
myths weren't true.
Some of the students were able to
