Goderich hosts Science Fair Brussels PS news Students host science night Once again the annual Huron County Science Fair was an unqualified success. Ninety-one students from Grades 7 and 8, representing the Huron County Public and the Huron-Perth Separ­ ate School Boards of Education and the Clinton and District Christian School, displayed 69 projects at the Goderich Knights of Columbus Centre on Wednesday, April 9. The projects examined everything from the flexibility of goalie sticks to ways of improving student learning in classroom Champion ice carver teaches World and six time U.S. National Ice Carving Champion, Mark Daukas of Costa Mesa, California was at Iceculture Inc., Hensail, last week where he conducted an intensive 45-hour, hands-on advanced ice carving course for chefs and others involved in the hospitality industry. Ten students from as far away as Britain, Ottawa and Northern Ontario registered for three different sessions - New American Ice Sculpture (the use of power tools); The Mark Daukas snow- filled logo technique; Carving Faces and Human Anatomy. Students worked inside the 65 x 30 ft. custom-built Iceculture freezer which is equipped with work benches and power outlets. They also attended classroom sessions to learn ice carving theories, how to modify power tools for ice carving, see slide presentations and learn to mold human faces in clay. Daukas pioneered the use of power tools for ice carving and a measure of his success as a sculptor is reflected in the results of national and international competition. Mark has won 46 of the 52 competition events that he has entered. Daukas is a much sought after sculptor, speaker and teacher who has motivated over 500 beginner, intermediate and advanced carvers from North America's finest hotels and clubs. He conducts seminars and demonstrations throughout North America and has a client list of prestigious corporations, clubs and celebrities - including the Ritz Carlton, Elizabeth Taylor, Mel Gib­ son, Mercedes Benz and Universal Pictures. Daukas sculpted a set of Disney caricatures for Elizabeth situations. Judges had a very tough time making the final decision as to which three of the top notch contenders would represent our county at the Canada-Wide Science Fair in early May. The judges' final decision named David Lisle and Duane Schiestel, both Grade 8 students from Wingham Public School, and Curtis McNeil from Colborne Central Public School, as the three winners. Organizers of the Huron County Science Fair were encouraged by the level of projects at the fair this year. They believe that this is an indication of the quality of science education that the students in this county receive in the local schools. In the past two years, the winners at the Huron County Science Fair have won three silver and two bronze medals at the Canada-Wide Science Fair. It is felt that this year's winners will do equally well. Japanese in any ice carving event. There were projects that varied from paper airplanes, to crystals, to meteorites. It turned out very well. The students, teachers, and parents all enjoyed it very much. Eight students recently started an Enrichment Art Workshop - Alexis Patch, Kelly White, Lauren Hoegy, Jessica Spink, Justine King, Brooklyn Wheeler, Jenna Krotz and Buck Duclos attended. They were taught about primary, secondary, and tertiary colours, and they made colour wheels. This course is taught by Mrs. Humphries of Walton. Four students will be chosen to go to East Wawanosh. At East Wawanosh, a few students will be chosen to go on a tour of three Art Studios in Ontario. Kindergarten registration is on Wednesday. There are 28 students signed up already. Courtney Sallows, and Nicole Mastnak are organizing a talent show to be held on either April 30 or May 2. The auditions for this show will be held on the week of April 21. A lot of people are signing up, but we still need more. We would like to give a special thanks to Courtney, and Nicole. You're doing a great job. This year there will be a skipping demo team. This team will consist of Grade 5, 6 and 7 students. They are hoping that the demo team will get students interested in skipping, especially for Jump Rope For Heart, which is approaching .quickly. The demo team will be helping students in the primary .grades to learn to skip and teach them tricks. E. Madill to see a presentation on the Titanic. In preparation, the Grade 8s have recently read a historical fiction novel, called SOS Titanic. We were amazed at how much true information was in the historical novel. We also learned some of the myths weren't true. Some of the students were able to play roles.
