THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 16,1997 Minister bases sermon on children’s story Welcoming worshippers and handing out the order of worship service on Sunday, April 13 at the Knox United Church were Isabel Logan and Becky. Rev. Mary Jane Hobden welcomed everyone. This was followed by the singing of Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee for song time. A prelude of familiar hymns played by organist, Mrs. Elizabeth Procter, set an inspiring welcoming atmosphere. The silent meditation, the Call to Worship responsively and the Prayer of Approach in unison were followed by the singing of All Praise to Thee and Prayer of Affirmation in unison. Rev. Hobden lit the Christ candle. The mixed choir sang In Remembrance of Me accompanied by Elizabeth Procter at the piano. Scripture readings were from the New Testament, Acts 3: 12 - 19 and the gospel lesson from Luke 24: 36b - 48. The children gathered in the front pews to listen to a story. Rev. Hobden told them about a two- year-old girl named Joanna and her mother. They enjoyed playing together, making cookies and being together all day long. One day her mother said she would have to go away for about 10 days but she would be back, so Joanna stayed with her grandparents. Community showers bride Approximately 60 friends, neighbours and relatives of Krista Bird gathered in the WI Hall, Belgrave on Sunday afternoon April 6 to wish her well on her upcoming marriage. Krista's two grandmothers, Marie Voisin and Jean Ives were in attendance, as well as a number of aunts and cousins. Krista, her mother Linda Bird and bridesmaid Marilyn McLean were seated at the front of the hall and a short program was enjoyed by all. The master of ceremonies, Nancy Pancake supper, April 16 The Pancake Supper is on Wednesday, April 16 from 5 - 7 p.m. in the Knox Untied Church basement. The Belgrave Guides, Brownies and Sparks canvassed the streets with their cookie blitz and had a very successful evening. Thanks to everyone for their support. Mr. and Mrs. Maitland Edgar of Petrolia, Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Edgar, RR 4, Wingham, Mrs. Irlma Edgar, Wingham and Mrs. Winnifred Johnston of Braemar Retirement Home spent Thursday afternoon, April 10 at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Stonehouse. The occasion was Helen's 80th birthday. Other relatives, neigh bours and friends also visited at the Stonehouses' and enjoyed birthday cake. Special birthday greetings are extended from the community to Helen on this special occasion. Sincere sympathy is extended from the community to Steve and Michele Young and family in the recent loss of Steve's mother, Marg Young. May your thoughts and prayers be with them at this their time of sorrow. Following the baptism of Jessica Lila Marie Procter on Sunday, April 13 in the Knox United Her mother came back just as the Lord himself came back. The children adjourned downstairs to Sunday School. Jesus, Friend of Little Children was sung. The Sacrament of Baptism was followed as outlined in the song book. Ruth Gordon, member of session presented Jessica Lila Marie Procter for initiation in the body of Christ through baptism. Jessica's big brother Andrew, poured the water into the font in preparation for baptism. Ken, Lila, Andrew, Ben and Jessica gathered at the front of the church. After baptizing, Rev. Mary Jane Hobden presented Jessica to the congregation as the newest sister in Christ. The minister lit a candle and presented it to the Procters. The candle was received on behalf of Jessica to be lit at special times in her life that she may remember her baptism and the love of God which surrounds her. Jessica was presented with a gift and certificate on behalf of the congregation. The baptismal hymn was Out of Deep, Unordered Water. The sermon centered around the children's story. John Nixon and Jim McCracken received the offering, followed by the offertory song All That I Am. The hymn The Head That Once was sung followed by the Passing of the Peace, Prayer of Great Jardin, introduced pianists, Judy Bondi and Julie Sanders, and led in a sing-along. Guests contributed "Advice to the Bride" written on file cards and a random selection was read. Nancy read an original poem "A Tribute to Krista" and she was then presented with many lovely gifts. Co-hostess Linda Baxter and fifth line neighbours served a bounteous buffet luncheon. The bride to be made a very fitting speech thanking everyone for making her bridal shower a very special event. Church, Belgrave, family and friends were guests at a delicious dinner at the home of Jessica's family, Mr. and Mrs. Ken Procter, Andrew and Ben. Celebrating the occasion were Ida Procter, Belgrave; Doug and Debbie Procter, Seaforth; Faye Procter, London; Michael Procter, Belgrave; Bill and Marie Stewart, Dungannon; Elaine, Paul and Curtis O'Donnell, Goderich; Anna belle Stewart and Don Ferguson, Windsor; John and Sandra Dorsch, Amanda and Melinda; Dave and Sherri Sippel, Nichole, Scott, Christie and Daniel; Cam and Mary Cook and Rev. Allan Rush and Rev. Mary Jane Hobden and Stephen. Mr. and Mrs. Gord Pengelly have returned home from their winter stay in Arizona. Welcome back Gord and Myrtle. Session members serving communion were Ruth Gordon, Melanie Pletch, Elizabeth Procter, Mary Thomas, John Campbell and John Nixon. The Prayer after Communion was recited in unison. The closing hymn was The Strife Is O'er. The Sending Forth’, Commission and Three Fold Amen, "Go Now In Peace", brought the WMS meets The WMs held its meeting on Monday, April 7 at the home of Freda Scott. The meeting was opened with the purpose. The hymn Crown Him With Many Crowns was read. Margaret Siertsema gave the secretary's report and Ivy Cloakey gave the treasurer's report. An invitation was read from South Kinloss WMS to attend the spring rally on May 12. Nine present read an Easter or spring poem for roll call. The Easter meeting from the Glad Tidings was read with Alice Nicholson, Ivy and Margaret taking part. Rev. Cathrine Campbell read the scripture. Thirty-nine sick and shut-in visits were recorded. "The Day of Resurrection" was read and Rev.‘'Campbell closed with prayer. The hostess served a lovely lunch. The flowers in the church were placed by her family in loving memory of Shannon Vincent. The official board meeting in Knox United Church is Tuesday, April 15 at 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 16 is the Pancake Supper from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, April 17 is Calvin- Brick UCW meeting at the home of Gloria Dow beginning at 8 p.m. UCW discusses legislation The Afternoon Unit of the UCW met at the home of Mary Taylor on Tuesday, April 8 with 11 members present. Kay Roberts opened the meeting by reading a poem by J. L. Bolding entitled "Good News". Olive Bolt led the worship service. The theme was "Life is what we put into it, not what we get out of it." At the conclusion of the service everyone enjoyed listening to some hymns from John McIntosh's tape. The minutes of the March meeting were read and approved. Lois Chamney gave the treasurer's report. Mary Hunter invited the unit to her home for the May meeting. A discussion was held concerning Mr. Lloyd Axworthy's proposed legislation to place controls on the manufacturing of land mines. It was decided the women would support a letter writing campaign. Mrs. Hunter presented the Bible Study continuing with the book of Sunday, April 20 there is lunch following the service at Knox. Also the youth group is having a movie night from7 - 9 p.m. at the home of Bill and Muriel Coultes. April 21, Rejoice and Rest, an event celebrating the 35th anniversary of the UCW will be held at Exeter United Church. Theme speaker is Rev. Cheryl-Ann Stadelbauer-Sampa. Registration is at 6:30 p.m. Matthew, chapter 12, verses 21 - 33. Ida Procter was in charge of the mission study and chose as her topic the child prostitution problem in Asian countries. She presented some very alarming facts, one being that girls as young as 11 are forced into the business. Mrs. Roberts closed the meeting with the benediction. A social time was enjoyed while having coffee, tea and squares. Moms talk toys Mabel's Moms met at their regular time on Wednesday, April 9. Those who attended were: Kim Higgins, Laura and Ashley; Alice Yuill and Brianna; Linda Hess, Andrew and Judith; Donna Raynard, Trevor and Heidi; Mary Jane Hobden and Stephen; Candace Chaffe, Brandon and Austin. The topic they discussed was "Toys".
