Madill student leads animated discussions Remembering 125 years CMrating (Brusseis ’ History By Bonnie Gropp Citizen staff Art students at F.E. Madill Sec ondary School had a rare treat last week, when a member of the ani mation crew who worked on the recent movie Space Jam, visited. Daryl Graham, a Madill alumnus, and son of art teacher Dee Graham spent last Friday sketching and dis cussing his work with students throughout the day. The former West Wawanosh resident now resides in Oakville where he is employed by Chuck Gamage Ani mation. Gamage, who contracts out to Disney and Warner Brothers tQ name a few, and his staff, have worked on such feature films as Roger Rabbit, An American Tale and Highlander. Daryl, who spent a co-op term in high school doing graphic art work for The Citizen and its affiliate, The Rural Voice, was hired by Gamage last May as an assistant, but has quickly moved up to animator. He hopes to be working soon on what he describes as a prequel-sequel to Beauty and the Beast, entitled Christmas Bell. "There's a 99.9 per cent chance that this project is ours. I am very excited about it." While animation of a full-length film used to take almost a decade to complete, Daryl says that process can be completed today in about two years. The animators working on the film, do hundreds of thou sands of drawings, Daryl says. For animation, Daryl demonstrates using the flash card simulation, that it takes 24 drawings per second. "And if there is more than one character in a scene that's usually doubled," says Daryl. Putting some action to it The secret of animation is how quickly each picture changes, approximately 24 per second. Artist and animator Daryl Graham, a former student of F.E. Madill spent Friday talking to art classes about his work as an assistant animator on the mvoie Space Jam and now as a full-time animator with an Oakville-based company. While many graduates are strug gling to find their happy endings, Daryl is thrilled to be where he is today. "The people I work with are excellent at what they do. It has been a good learning atmosphere for me and they have been terrific people to work with."
