The burden of cancer can be reduced in two ways - by preventing cancer from occurring at all and by improving treatment and services for those who do develop the disease, as well as their family and friends. International cancer studies suggest that at least two-thirds of cancers are preventable. Lifestyle choices like these make a difference: f __ Be a non smoker...Choose smoke-free spaces... Help children to remain smoke-free Each year, thousands of Canadians die from tobacco- _ * I related illnesses, including cancer, heart disease and stroke. The Canadian Cancer Society doesn't want you to be another statistic. Eat properly Diet, including alcohol, has been linked to cancers of the breast, colon, mouth, stomach, pancreas and prostate. It is estimated about 35% of cancers are related to what you eat. The Canadian Cancer Society believes a healthy diet is one of the best defences. The Society recommends following Canada's Guidelines for Healthy Eating, designed to promote well-being and reduce the risk of developing health problems such as cancer, heart disease, diabetes and obesity. Avoid the sun Skin cancer is almost always curable if treated early. Our "Sunsense" message is simple. "Slip! Slap! Slop!" Slip on a shirt...Slap on a hat...Slop on some sunscreen. Currently, breast cancer cannot be prevented but positive breast health behaviours and treatment breakthroughs can reduce premature death and disability caused by breast cancer in women. The Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) invests in the most promising research across the country. The money the Society raises for research is distributed by its research affiliate, the National Cancer Institute of Canada, through a stringent peer review system. This research has provided results: • In 1970, the five-year survival rate for childhood leukemia was 50 per cent, today it is 83 per cent; • In 1970, the five-year survival rate for testicular cancer was 73 per cent, today it's 95 per cent; • In 1970, the five-year survival rate for Hodgkin's Disease was 60 per cent, today it's 80 per cent. Through money raised during the April canvass, a large portion of the research grants goes to "fundamental" research to examine cells, oncogenes, and molecular structure that will provide answers about many types of cancer. The more you know, the more you can help! For more information on local programs, contact your local CCS office at 1-519-271-4270 or 1-800-294-0086.
