The Citizen, 1997-04-09, Page 23‘Double Exposure’ at Centre Who and what are Double Exposure? If you haven’t already heard, the multi-talented duo of Bob Robertson and Linda Cullen make up Double Exposure, the highest rated variety programme on the CBC Radio network. They provide absolutely brilliant political satire through uncanny voice impersonations and fast- paced sketches. Double Exposure, the live show, comes to Kitchener's The Centre In The Square for one performance only on Wednesday, April 16. Joining Bob and Linda is Canadian comedienne Nancy White. On stage, when Robertson does Jean Chretien, it's impossible to tell him from the real thing, other than that Chrdtien is not likely to attribute his folksy popularity to his "self-defecating humour," and it has been said of Robertson that he does a better Preston Manning than Manning himself. But whether it's Don Cherry, Lucien Bouchard, Pierre Trudeau, or Bill Clinton, Robertson's impersonations are matched only by his quick-witted, iaugh-a-minute send-offs of these individuals. The impersonations are incredible but the real key to Double Exposure's success lies in the writing! And Cullen? You haven't lived until you've heard her version of Senator Pat Carney singing, / Want To Marry A Lighthouse Keeper. Her slower-than-life Barbara MacDougal is a staple of her live shows, as are her takes on Rita MacNeil and Adrienne Clarkson. And her Margaret Thatcher is so bang-on it sends chills down the spines of socialists from coast to coast. One of the real treats in seeing Double Exposure perform live, is the amount of local content they get into every show. For weeks in advance of a performance, Robertson and Cullen read local papers and research the various cities on the upcoming tour, with the end result being that they usually have all the dirt that's fit to joke about, and they constantly surprise audiences with their knowledge of local issues and personalities. Double Exposure's live shows also feature a vast array of special effects and music. Special guest Nancy White is known to millions of Canadians for her work as the acid-tongued songwriter on CBC Radio's Sunday Morning, where she was a humorous thorn in the side of Canadian politics for 15 years. White has entertained audiences in every comer of Canada and says she is getting tired of comers and would like her booking agent to find some gigs in theatres! In addition to her political material, the Actra Award winning artist also does a family show. The response to her 1990 CD release Momnipotent was whelming. "I wouldn't say I was overwhelmed," says White, "but I definitely did feel whelmed. Momnipotent is White's musical tribute to parenthood and one of the funniest and finest collections of songs you’ll ever have the pleasure to enjoy.
