at landfill
Going to a good cause
By Janice Becker

It may be a matter of weeks
before residents of Blyth will be
paying for excess garbage delivered
to the Blyth-Hullett landfill site.
At the April 2 meeting of the
landfill committee, Blyth Clerk-
Treasurer John Stewart was autho
rized to prepare a bylaw which
would implement a user fee for the
village.
The fee rates set out by the com
mittee were: 52 free bag tags per
year then $2 per tag; car trunks, $5;
small trucks and dumpsters, $10;
wagons, $25; single axle trucks,
$35 and tandem axle trucks, $50.
If passed by Blyth council, the
user-fee system would take effect
June 1.
John Giousher of Blyth is putting his, and others’,smoking
habit and others to good use by collecting the plastic
strips from the cigarette packages. The thousands of
strips gathered are taken to Huronlea in Brussels by Pat
Brigham where the seniors count and bundle the plastic.
The bundles are then returned to the cigarette company
which then contributes money towards teddy bears and
wheelchairs for children in need. This lot was collected in
about two weeks thanks to donations from near and far
after people read an article on the project in The Citizen.

Owned by Gary Courtney since November
1978, Manning's Building Supplies Ltd. has
sustained many of the services developed
by the original owner, Alex Manning and his
two sons John and Bill.
Along with the wood products, Manning's
inventory includes a full line of tools,
builders' hardware, windows, doors,
plumbing and electrical supplies. Blyth
Flooring Centre owned by John Battye and
Jim Johnston's Fine Carpentry business
are also located in Manning's building.
Today their capacity has grown to 26,000
square feet which covers 8 lots.
"We've always tried to provide our local
builders with friendly service, quality
products and competitive pricing" said Bob
Mclnnes, a long-time staff member of
Manning's.
"Advertising in The Citizen, throughout our
years in business, has given us good
exposure in our target area. We've had a
lot of calls recently asking for a price quote,
which was directly related to our current ad
campaign" said Mclnnes. "Their prices are
very reasonable and we get results."
