By Bonnie Gropp
Citizen staff
Brussels council passed a budget
on Monday night, that represents a
zero per cent increase for ratepay
ers.
This includes the increase in
assessment of $434.57, so the
amount to be raised for taxes this
year is $144,996.77.
The grants from the province are
down this year from $112,834 to
$98,985, while the road rebate from
the county has been reduced to
reflect reductions there. This figure
for 1997 is $1,477, down from
$2,955.
On the expenditures side, there
has been $3,000 included in this
year's budget for the municipal
election.
Insurance is up $2,543 to
$20,924.
In the capital expenditures,
$4,500 has been budgeted for top-
soil and grass seed at the fire hall,
new pagers, equipment hose and
nozzle.
A transfer from reserves of
$18,654.11 is going towards the
budgeted amount of $39,750 for
road repairs and upgrades. Lavis

Greg Wilson, a representative on
the road committee, agreed to
check the streets and compare it to
Lavis suggestions for repairs.
A used salt and sand spreader has
been purchased for $750.
The recreation levy had a signifi

The budget had been reviewed by
the auditors, Clerk-Treasurer
Donna White said.
It was unanimously approved by

Fischers wed 50 years
Though it started out with rough
waters, the marriage of Ken and
Doris Fischer (White) has been
sailing along smoothly for 50
years.
The couple wed April 5, 1947, at
the Brussels Anglican Church
manse. Their honeymoon to Kitch
ener was delayed by four days due
to flooding which had washed out
all the bridges.
Attending the bride on that happy
day was Fem White, sister of the
bride, while Charlie Fischer, broth
er of the groom was the best man.
Mr. Fischer was born in Grey
Twp. and continues to farm the
same property, now with the assis
tance of his son, Murray. The Fis
chers moved into Brussels in 1980.
The couple keeps active with
involvement in the Anglican
Church and the curling club. Mr.
Fischer is also a member of the
Brussels Legion.
Along with their six children, 16
grandchildren and two great-
granddaughters, the Fischers cele
brated their 50th wedding anniver
sary at a gather at Brussels, Morris
and Grey Community Centre, Fri
day evening. Friends and family
attended from London, Stratford,
Hillsburg and the local area.

taxpayers $800.
Councillors were told at their
April 7 meeting that the 50 foot
square property on George St.,
owned by Merlin Jutzi was being
given to the village. The only catch
is the $300 plus in back taxes and
the approximate $400 in legal fees
to transfer.
At last month's meeting, council
had expressed no interest in the
property, which is too small for any
development. Though it is serviced,
there is a 25 foot setback. "You
can't put a 2x4 on it," Councillor
Joe Seili said, Monday night.
Clerk-Treasurer Donna White
said that as of June 27 the property
would be three years in arrears, so
action of some kind was warranted.
She presented three possibilities.
Council could pay the 1994 taxes
which would delay the decision for
