B elgraveThe news from 1 Holiday brings family home Compiled by Linda Campbell Phone 357-2188 Brandon Chaffe celebrated his fifth birthday on Monday, March 24 with his parents, Tony and Candace and family. John, Linda, Jeremy and Justin Campbell, Belgrave, John and Laurie and Nathan Manners of Brantford spend Easter weekend in London at the home of Bob and Heather Maass. Supper guests at the same home were Don Maass and Karen Grayson. Mr. and Mrs. Philip Stopforth and Alexandria of Oakville and Elizabeth Procter were dinner guests on Easter Sunday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Larry Mayberry in Londesboro. Mr. and Mrs. Philip Stopforth and Alexandria of Oakville enjoyed supper and an Easter egg hunt at the home of Beth Procter. Mr. and Mrs. Parks of Petrolia called on their uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Stonehouse on Good Friday. On Saturday, Mr. and Mrs. Maitland Edgar of Petrolia visited at the same home. Laura Johnston and Bob and Jane Grasby spent Easter weekend with George and Mary Johnston and family of Ilderton and Don and Gary Leitch of London. Sympathy is extended to Susan and Jamie Robinson from friends and neighbours on the passing of Susan's father, Bill Elston. May thoughts and prayers be with them in this their time of sorrow. Mr. and Mrs. Rob Roy, Christina and Emily of Peterboro, Mr. and Mrs. Doug Cousins and Brandon of Guelph, Mrs. Rick Ball, Matthew and Alicia of Hanover, and Mr. and Mrs. Richard Anderson, Daniel and Sarah of Goderich visited over the Easter weekend with their parents Mr. and Mrs. Ross Anderson. Mr. and Mrs. Geoff Viglianti, Stephanie and Michple of London, Mr. and Mrs. Brian Shaw, Mark and Graeme of Kintore and Mr. and Mrs. Richard Gethke, Shawn and Bradley of Goderich were Easter visitors at the home of their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Les Shaw. Bill Coultes speaks at Knox This year the World Day of Prayer was held on Friday, March 7 at Knox United Church in Belgrave. The program was prepared by the women of Korea. Calvin Brick UCW hosted the event, ably assisted by the ladies from the Presbyterian and Knox churches. The service was led by Joan Pedersen. Gloria Dow opened the service by singing In The Garden, accompanied at the piano by Jessie McGee. Alice Nicholson read a poem "Like a Seed Grows Into a Tree. Readers for the service were Ruth Gordon, Donna Shaw, Gloria Dow, Margaret Jamieson, Barbara Anderson and Freda Scott. Freda Johnston was pianist for the hymns. Gloria’s second song was Sing the Glad Tidings. Bill Coultes of Knox was the guest speaker. He talked of some of the many problems the Korean people are facing. The offering of $65.35 was taken up by Louise Bosman and Ivy Cloakey. The service closed with the Benediction. Girl Guides prepare for Easter The next number is.... It was the task of Holly Pfeiffer, left, and Vicky Black of East Wawanosh Public School to call the numbers at the fundraising bingo, March 25. The money raised will go towards a senior class trip at the end of the year. Students raise funds A capacity crowd attended the Grade 8 EWPS fundraising ham and turkey bingo at the Women's Institute Hall in Belgrave on Tuesday evening, March 25. Regular games, share the wealth, as well as children's games were enjoyed. Winners of the bingos were Shauna Dawson, Muriel Taylor, Kerri Meier, Lindsay Hoff, Laura Meier, Trevor Hopf, Mike Timm, Heather Black, Betty Armstrong, Wilma Higgins, Angie Emery, Erin Gaunt, Donna Bi eman, Hazel Reid, and Debbie Pfeiffer. Lucky door prize winners were Ross Higgins winning an Easter lily; Michele Nixon, Easter gift basket gift set; an Easter lily, Trevor Koehler, potted tulips; Trevor Hopf; Tupperware, Donna Shaw; hyacinth, Alice Nicholson; and Tupperware, Barb Pletch. The Grade 8 class is grateful to Wescast Industries, Zehrs Plus in Goderich, Zehrs Plus in Listowel, Brian's Valu-Mart, Shaw's K Foods, Wingham, Belgrave Co-op and Linda Campbell and Isabel Campbell for their donations. East Wawanosh Twp. realizes $30,768 surplus East Wawanosh council realized a surplus for 1996. James Brennan of Doane Ray­ mond Chartered Accountants, Wingham, presented the financial statement to council at the March meeting, showing a $30,768 sur­ plus. Every member of council, as well as Clerk-Treasurer Winona Thomp­ son and Road Superintendent Ralph Campbell, were authorized to attend the Huron County Munic­ ipal Officers' Association meeting, April 11. Steve Robinson and Barbara Black were authorized to attend the CPR course in Auburn, April 7 and 8. Tenders for 19,500 tonnes of A gravel for roads in the north end of the township will be let. The town­ ship will aiSo advertise for calcium chloride with Morris Twp. Council agreed that calcium will be sprayed at residential entrances only in the south end of the town­ ship with other roads sprayed at the discretion of Campbell. Council approved the following grants and levies: $3,000 grant to the Belgrave Community Centre board; $200 grant, Belgrave, Blyth, Brussels School Fair; $11,151 levy, Blyth and District Community Centre board; $14,310 levy, Blyth and District Fire Department; $10,004 levy, Wingham and Area Fire Department and $5,357.15 levy, Maitland Valley Conservation Authority. A severance application was approved for Knox United Church, Auburn. On March 27 after returning from March Break, the Belgrave Girl Guides were full of energy. They worked on tray favours for the Wingham Hospital for Easter. The girls also enjoyed an Easter egg hunt and Jello Jiggler Eggs for a treat. On Feb. 26 the Girl Guides of Belgrave went to The Advance Times in Wingham They learned how the newspaper is made and Knox service Good Friday Service was held at Knox United Church on March 28. Rev. Mary Jane Hobden conducted the worship service. The Call to Worship and the Prayer of Approach repeated in unison was followed by the singing of When I Survey the Wondrous Cross and the Prayer of Confession. The Hebrew scripture was taken from Isaiah 52: 13-53, 12. Psalm 22 was read responsively before the singing of Go to Dark Gethsemane. The gospel was taken from John 18: 1-19, 42. Were You There and O Sacred Head were also sung accompanied by Elizabeth Procter at the organ. The congregation left the church in silence following the sending forth, a blessing to be pronounced on Easter morning. Each one was to leave in silence remembering what Jesus gave for them and what His followers were feeling that first Good Friday. Mabel’s Moms Mabel's Moms met at their regular time on Wednesday, March 26. Those who attended were: Kim Higgins, Laura and Ashley; Debbie Appleby and Britany; Sherri Sippel, Scott and Daniel; Meagan and Ben Pletch; Linda Hess, Andrew and Judith; Donna Raynard, Trevor and Heidi; Mary Jane Hobden and Stephen; Candace Chaffe, Brandon, and Austin; Heather Jones, Shea-Lynn and James Murray. Their topic was "Fitness". how they put pictures in the paper. This trip was to work on their Reporter badge. Afterwards they enjoyed a treat at Donut Delight On Feb. 20 the Belgrave Girl Guides invited the Blyth Guides for a skating party. They had lots of balloons, snacks and punch. They made a lot of new friends and played an awesome game. The Belgrave Guides were very pleased to have the Blyth group as their guests. They had lots of fun. 44 play games of euchre There were 11 tables of euchre in play at the Women's Institute on Wednesday, March 26. Winners were: high lady, Marie Merkley; second high lady, Agnes Gaunt; lone hands, Helen Martin; low lady, Ada Taylor; high man, Cal Burke; second high man, Edith Coultes; lone hands, Mabel Wheeler, low man, Milt Boyd.
