Country Playhouse announces season Singing in the season The Blyth Festival Singers, under the direction of Wade Whittaker presented a concert for Easter on Sunday evening at St. Ambrose Roman Catholic Church, Brussels. The evening consisted of classical and spiritual music, with featured soloists and groups. Admission was a donation to the food bank if desired. Girls in the band meet the Jays By Janice Becker Citizen staff For five area teens, March break was more than two-weeks off school. It was an opportunity to perform for the Toronto Blue Jays in Dunedin and meet some of their favourite players. As members of the Seaforth Girls' Marching Band, Amber Park- Shaw, Nicole Lowe and Nicole Bernard, all of Brussels, and Melis sa Grisdale and Missy Engel of Cranbrook, travelled to Florida March 7-16, to visit the Blue Jays and see the sights. "The band plans a trip to Florida or Myrtle Beach each year," says Diane Duskocy, an adult assistant with the band. "The group fundrais es and earns money through perfor mances throughout the year to help pay the cost, then each member pays a flat rate of $250 for the entire trip. That includes every thing." As well as 67 band mem bers, six chaperones and 35 other adults went along on the trip. The band got the opportunity to perform at a Blue Jays spring train ing game against the Texas Rangers, by applying, says Dusko cy. "We applied and were accepted. The band has played at Skydome before and we hope to again next year." Though the girls were a little shy in talking about their trip south, Duskocy says they were not at all shy when they were there. The girls acquired the signatures of such young ball players as Car- los Delgado, Shawn Green, Darrel Whitmore and Philippe Crispo. While at another sporting venue, an NHL contest between the Tampa Bay Lightening and New York Islanders, the girls screamed so much, everyone in the arena knew where the group was and who we were even though we were way up in the stands, says Duskocy. Huron MPP Helen Johns was at the game and spoke to the band. The group also ventured to the popular Florida sites such as Busch Gardens, the zoo, a river boat cruise with a six-course meal and, of course, the beach. Several came back with sunbums, says Duskocy. One disappointment was the can cellation of the band's performance at the Pasadena Trailer Park for the snowbirds (Canadian who winter in the south), due to rain. The five local girls, who have been members of the band for any where from five-months up to two years, say they joined the band for the experience of learning to play different instruments, the opportu nity to meet new people and because they thought it would be fun. Each spring, the band seeks out new members, through the recruit ing of band leader Charlie Kalbfleish, a former music teacher at Goderich District Collegiate Institute. By joining in the spring, the girls have time to develop with the band and be ready for the Christmas parade season. "The talent is out there," says Duskocy, "and we are always look ing for new members." In the past, the band has partici pated in as many as three parades in one day, says band assistant Trish Duskocy. "They usually play in about 20 each year." The band's booster committee says these trips and the success of the band is thanks to the dedicated girls who come out to practices, performances, competitions and fundraisers; the parents who are always there to help; the Huron County Board of Education that supplies busing for practices and parades at a nominal cost and Over land Tours, who helps organize the trip each year. "The band represents Huron County very well," says Duskocy. Places, please! Huron Country Playhouse has announced the complete line-up for its 1997 summer season.
