MNR warns of high water Continued from page 15 spring wind storms to cause flooding." Hodgson has written to municipalities within the Great Lakes Basin and has urged them to update their contingency plans for flood emergencies. Updating plans will help ensure that municipalities and property owners are aware of the flooding danger and are as prepared as possible. Local Conservation Authorities and MNR District Offices will work closely with the municipalities and help them plan for any eventually. Lake levels may reach the record levels experienced in 1985 and 1986, which were responsible for severe flooding and erosion damage. With high water levels, Lake Erie and Laek St. Clair are particularly susceptible to flooding caused by storms. Strong winds can cause water levels to rise sharply in a short period of time at one end of a lake, causing serious flooding. In addition, pounding waves can cause serious shoreline erosion and property damage. "We are doing all we can to control water levels, but nature has a much greater influence than man on overall water levels on the Great Lakes," said Hodgson. "Floods can occur at any time of year, but late winter and early spring storms increase that potential. In order to minimize any possible damage, we are strongly encouraging shoreline commun ities, property owners and response agencies to be prepared," said Hodgson.
