Christine Johnson Brussels and Ethel United Churches April is just around the comer and we can see lots of signs of spring. The sun is shining and we know that our world is going to break out into new life once again. It makes me want to shout out "Hallelujah", and praise God for the glories of the earth. Signs of new life come to us in many different ways. Some of the most important for me are our infants, children and youth. Each one is so precious and just bursting with life. Each one is like a different flower, with a different bloom about to unfold. For this reason, ministry to children and youth is of the utmost importance. It takes a great deal of time and energy for churches to sponsor and run Christian education programs, but when we experience the vitality and beauty that is within each child we too are inspired and see the power of God working through everyone, regardless of age. April also reminds me that we will be hosting another Possibility Day for children on Friday, April 25 at Duff's United Church in Walton. A joint project of the Brussels, Ethel, Duffs (Walton) and Bluevale United Churches, we host a Possibility Day whenever there is a holiday created by a board of education Professional Development day. We are hoping to have lots of outside activities (weather permitting), some fun and meaningful Bible study, energetic (and loud) music, and crafts. ALL children are welcome. There is no denominational requirement, nor is it even necessary for the children to have a church home. We just want children to be able to have an enjoyable experience learning about Christianity in a supportive and non-threatening way. Last fall, Brussels United Church hosted about 80 children on our first Possibility Day. On our next day, we limited the number to about 65 children. With lots of adult leaders, both days were full of activities, a nutritious lunch, and lots of hilarious craziness. I can assure you we were all tired when we got home. We designed this program for two major reasons: 1. to offer religious education for children in a non-threatening and positive way; and 2. to provide a service to working parents who require care for their children. (Rest assured that we had lots of children whose parents were at home as well.) Last fall, our two Possibility days drew children from most of the surrounding communities. Our program is geared for children aged four to 12. It starts at 8:30 a.m. and ends at about 3:30 p.m. Cost is $5 per child. Registration for our last Possibility Day filled up quickly so we encourage you to register your children early. Deadline for registration is Friday, April 18. To register call Rev. James Murray or Rev. Chi is Johnston at 887-6540. We are always seeking adult volunteers to help run the program, so if you have any interest please don't hesitate to call and discuss it with us. Our emphasis is on providing a biblical message which encourages children to see their worth and potential as members of God's family. Children have so ,• many possibilities before them. All that new life just ready to burst forth is certainly something to celebrate!
