FARM SAFETY FACTS
DID YOU KNOW? ABOUT ACCIDENTS AND INJURIES...
It is estimated that every year in Canada:
• There are 130 farm-related deaths
• 1,200 people are hospitalized from farm-related injuries
• 50,000 people sustain farm-related injuries requiring them
to either seek medical attention or to take a day away
from normal work activities
• Of all agriculture-related injuries, 65% of fatal injuries
and 50% of injuries requiring hospitalization are related
to the use of agricultural machinery
• The very young and the elderly are at the greatest risk
of injury on the farm
DID YOU KNOW?
ABOUT HEARING LOSS PREVENTION...
• If you are standing three feet from a partner and
have to raise your voice to be heard above back
ground noise, the noise level is probably loud
enough to damage your hearing.
• Hearing can be permanently damaged by one
sudden loud sound, such as a shotgun blast.
Because of regular and extended use of equipment and
machinery, the potential for hearing loss among farmers is
increased. In fact, research has shown that hearing loss is
greater in the farming community than in the non-farming
community of the same age. Excessive noise from tractors,
grain dryers, chain saws, and even radios in enclosed cab
tractors and combines increases farmers' risk of hearing loss.
ABOUT CHEMICAL SAFETY ON THE FARM...
Some of the agricultural chemicals present on the farm include
gasoline, diesel fuel, oil, lubricants, veterinary supplies, rodent poi
sons, pesticides, and fertilizers. While the threat that these chemi
cals pose to children is usually apparent, they can also be harmful
adults if used improperly.

FARM CHEMICAL SAFETY CHECK LIST:
There are some basic guidelines which can help reduce the risks of exposure to pesticides and chemicals:
• Farm chemicals, pesticides, and herbicides must be stored away from children, in a clearly marked and
locked storage area.
• Read the label and follow the instructions. If an emergency occurs, take the label with you and give it to
the medical professionals.
• Practise good personal hygiene and wear the recommended protective clothing and equipment. This
■ equipment must be maintained to ensure it works properly.
• Do not mix pesticides unless it is recommended.
• A supply of clean water should be readily available, along with first-aid supplies.
• Be aware of poisoning symptoms. If you feel ill, leave the area and get help.
• Shower and change clothes immediately after application of any chemical.
• Wash contaminated clothing separately from other laundry. Don't forget to clean the washer when
finished.
• Store pesticides in their original containers with a legible label.
• Keep pesticides in a well marked and locked storage area.
• Transport pesticides in the open box of a truck, with all containers secured. Never transport pesticides
in the passenger area or trunk of any vehicle.
• Do not re-enter a crop until the specified re-entry time on the label has elapsed (usually 24-28 hours)
without protective equipment suggested on the label.
