That popularity may arise from both an increased consumer de mand as well as farmers discover ing the pleasures of dairy goats. As with any animal a lot of work is involved, says the couple. "How ever, dairy goats are just like dogs. They will follow you around the bam; they are gentle and good with children." Eleanor says when they had their first herd, the children often helped with the milking. "It was a family time, a time to talk. Goats are smaller and less intimidating than cattle." The milk produced by the 130-animal herd is handled by Hewitt's dairy in Hagersville, with much of the prod uct going to a goat cheese factory in Orangeville. "The Orangeville plant is always looking for more milk," he says. The level of milk produced is similar to the dairy cattle quotas, though it is not set by a board and does not have to be purchases. "We determine our own quota," says Miller. The poorest months for milk production in goats is Novem ber to February, because the ani mals freshen in the spring.
