THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, MARCH 19,1997 For Teens, By Teens Time for the Lord of Knick-Knacks By Erin Roulston Ah, it's that time of the year again. Time for the world’s most famous to get all dressed up in their most outlandish designer clothes and head to the Oscars. The Oscar, "The lord of all knick-knacks, the King of tchotchkes" as Jim Carrey said. The very first Academy Awards was held on May 16, 1929 at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. There were 270 people in attendance. It was first televised in 1953 to 10,000 households. This year's awards will be held on March 24 at the Shrine Auditorium which seats 6,300. It is viewed in 29 million households. Billy Crystal is the host of the Oscars this year for the fifth time (he hosted for four consecutive years in 1989-92). Up for Best Picture this year are The English Patient, Fargo, Jerry Maguire, Secrets and Lies, and Teens experience sense of hunger By Mark Nonkes "No famine, flood, or earthquake has ever claimed the lives of 250,000 people in a single week. But malnutrition does just that every week." - Oxfam. This gives us something to think about, doesn't it? If you figure that out, it's about every four seconds that someone across the globe dies from malnutrition. Oxfam also reports that every one in five people world-wide is plagued by hunger, but the world produces more than enough food to feed everyone. Last week, Thursday and Friday, the Christian Reformed Church Youth Group participated in the 30- hour famine. The 20 of us went around for sponsors since we wouldn't eat for 30 hours. The money we collected is given to World Vision Canada. We OFF THE WALL Good holiday makes return to school tough Shine. I've only seen three of these, the first three, and I loved all of them. Fargo was funny, Jerry Maguire made me cry and The English Patient was beautiful. I don't know which one should win, but I'm guessing it will be The English Patient. I think it will win a lot of awards, since it received a whopping 11 nominations. Nomination for Best Actor are Ralph Fiennes for The English Patient, Tom Cruise for Jerry Maguire, Geoffrey Rush for Shine, Woody Harrelson for The People vs. Larry Flint and Billy Bob Thorton for Sling Blade. My vote goes to Tom Cruise because he's never won before and he has done some great work in the past. Nominated for Best Actress are Brenda Blethyn for Secrets and Lies, Diane Keaton for Marvin's Room, Frances McDormand for Fargo, Kristin Scott Thomas for The English Patient and Emily Watson for Breaking the Waves. I FEATURE estimate we made $1,000 to help people across the world, "who can't afford to go to school, who don't have clean water, who don't have enough to eat everyday." Our youth group spent most of the time at Siep and Ann Bosma's where we watched TV or movies, listened to music and did anything to take our minds off our growling stomachs. But millions of kids across the world have growling stomachs. We were lucky, because we could drink water and juice but a lol of people can't even have a drink to quench their thirst or the hunger in the pit of their stomachs. By 7 p.m. on Friday we wolfed down 10 pizzas, a bunch of buffalo wings and lots of garlic bread in about five minutes. We were all so thankful that we could eat again. But during those five minutes of think Frances McDormand should win; I thought she did a wonderful job. Those are the three big awards. I'm looking forward to finding out who will win, but I'm more excited about seeing all the actors. Who will wear what, who is dating whom? Will there by any big emotional moments? Last year Mira Sorvino's father cried when she won Best Supporting Actress and dedicated it to him. The whole audience was also choked up when Christopher Reeve appeared as a surprise guest. Will there by any funny incidents like the one with Jamie Lee Curtis's behind two years ago, or any moments of tension like Sharon Stone losing the envelope containing the name for Best Original Dramatic Score? Whatever happens I'm sure, it will be another exciting night at the Oscars. eating, about 75 people died of malnutrition. Goderich 524-BOWL ♦ extra * By Ashley Gropp ‘ March Break is almost over. School's about to reopen and yet it feels as though we just left. Some may be going back grudgingly after spending two of the best weeks of their lives away from school. Maybe they had a short fling in Florida and got a great tan. Maybe they partied every night. Maybe they visited a friend they hadn't seen in a long time. Whatever they did, these are the people who detest being dragged back to school the most. They need to keep in mind that they have great memories that their friends don't. Their stories will make for interesting conversation, and school is a place where about 1,000 teenagers hang out for six hours every day. Then there are those who had a mediocre break. The idea of going back to school doesn't thrill or devastate them. They might have hung out with the same couple of friends all the time (everyone else Give Someone a Second Chance, Discuss organ donation with your family and sign a donor card today. The Kidney Foundation of Canada The jjetP is AWAY!) or they made money working, between going to parties, movies or whatever. They had fun, but they realize that all good things must come to an end. Besides they want to see their travelling friends to find out how their weeks went! For anyone who had such a bad March Break, they are actually looking forward to going back to school. Just think - this means you'll be the only one having fun for a while! And for the rest of us...in three months it's SUMMER... RADFORD~AUTO j T FARM AND INDUSTRIAL PARTS HD 1/2" C.P.
