MNR offers phone service
for wild turkey licenses
The Ministry of Natural
Resources is introducing a new
telephone application system that
will now allow a hunter to purchase
a wild turkey licence conveniently
by phone.
"I am very pleased that MNR is
able to offer this new service," said
Natural Resources Minister Christ
Hodgson. "It will make it much
easier for Ontario turkey hunters to
purchase their licences."
From March 3, hunters can apply
for a wild turkey licence by calling
the MNR's toll-free Electronic
Licensing Line at 1-8OO-288-1155.
Hours of operation will be from
7 a.m. to 11 p.m., seven days a
week, until April 30.
To use this new telephone
application system, hunters will
need their 15-digit Outdoors Card
number, a valid Visa or Mastercard
number, and either a touch-tone or
rotary dial telephone to enter the
requested information. After the
application is made, a wild turkey
licence with game seal will be
mailed out to the hunter the
following business day. Seven
business days should be allowed
for delivery.
OMAFRA
provides
leadership
training
There are still a lew remaining
spots for the March Leadership in
Action (LIA) program. LIA is a
dynamic, hands-on seminar for
people in rural Ontario who want to
strengthen their personal leadership
skills. Participants will be led
through an intensive skills
development program which will
better equip them to deal with the
many challenges faced by people in
leadership positions in the 90s.
The four-day program is being
offered from March 24 to 27 at the
Country Squire Inn, Gananoque.
The cost for Leadership in Action
is $300 per person which includes
accommodation and meals. The
program is sponsored and delivered
by staff of the Ontario Ministry of

Hodgson announced this new
service while speaking at the
annual meeting of the Ontario
Federation of Anglers and Hunters
in Hamilton. He said it is being
carried out as a pilot project and, if
deemed successful, may be
expanded to include the sale of
other hunting licences.
Ontario now has approximately
12,500 registered wild turkey
hunters with approximately 2,000
more joining their ranks annually.
To be eligible for a wild turkey
licence, a qualified hunter must
first attend a Wild Turkey Hunter
Education Seminar sponsored by
the Ontario Federation of Anglers
and Hunters and then pass an
examination given by MNR.
MNR currently issues 4,200 wild
turkey licences each year for
hunting in southern Ontario.
Before the introduction of this
new telephone application system,
wild turkey licences could only be
purchased in person at MNR
offices where staff had to manually
process and file all applications.
This year it will still be possible to
apply for a wild turkey licence in
person at some MNR offices.
Hunters are advised to check first
to see if their local MNR office still
offers this service.

Show ‘99
The International Plowing Match and Farm Machinery
Show will be held in Huron County in 1999. The host
family is Earl and Linda Becker and Michael Becker,
along with several neighbouring farms, just north of

To promote this spectacular event, the Huron County
Plowing Match Committee is sponsoring a contest for a
suitable Theme, Slogan and Logo. Those chosen ideas
will (in whole or in part) be used on promotional material
advertising the upcoming event in ‘99. Wouldn’t it be great
to see your ideas published on the I.P.M. poster, or your
logo created on a lapel pin or sweatshirt.
This opportunity is open to all county residents and
must promote Huron County. Please mail your entries to
Diane Thiel, R.R. #2, Zurich, Ont. N0M 2T0 or OMAFRA,
Clinton, Ont. N0M 1L0. Contest closes March 27.
