Accountant Bob Lorce of Ward and Uptigrove told Brussels coun cil at its March 10 meeting that hydro consumption is down in Brussels, mainly because of the arrival of Union Gas. Lorce said, "The village will have trouble maintaining the present hydro rates if the kilowatts continue to drop." Clerk-Treasurer Donna White said that PUC would rather draw down money from the working funds to cover any decrease. Council looked at several ideas for inclusion in the 1997 budget proposal, such as road repairs, new pagers for the firefighters and med icals, the history book, asbestos removal at the municipal office basement and a salt/sand grader. The budget meeting is March 26 at 3 p.m. ♦♦♦ Reeve Gord Workman reported on a meeting with Maitland Valley Conservation Authority with regards to maintenance of the park and dam. He said that MVCA has no money for grass cutting at the park and with only one field ser vices employee now on staff, it will require assistance in lifting the logs for the lowering and raising of the dam waters. Workman said that there have been some volunteers regarding the logs, bill council will have to look into the best option, whether ten dering or buying a large mower for the grass cutting. When asked about a service club possibly taking over the work, Councillor Greg Wilson said if a club had the work to do, then the rules would have to be changed. "If the Optimists were to take it over, then they would be fundraising there, too," he said. The club had previously asked permission for allowing campers in the park, which MVCA had rejected. White said she would like to see the park used for camping over the homecoming weekend.*** Council decided to keep munici pal coverage with Frank Cowan Insurance for this year. However, it was agreed that tenders will be called several months before the policy comes due outlining specific requirements so that appropriate comparisons could be made before coming to a decision.*♦* Part Lot 241 in the Industrial Park, a 50 foot square piece of property on Princess and George Sts., will go for tax sale. The only way anything could be built on the land would be if it joined the rest of Lot 241, White said. Council had been offered the properly free, but with $313.30 owing in back taxes and legal fees which could amount to $400, they rejected the offer. "We start taking this over and anyone with a dead piece of proper ty will want us to take it over," said Councillor JoeJSeili. "They're just going to dump it on us."♦♦♦ Councillor Greg Wilson said that Melville Presbyterian Church is proposing changes to the parking lot, which will mean surface water will run onto the street downhill to the catch basin. Council agreed this shouldn't cause any problem.*♦* A donation was made to the Bel grave, Blyth, Brussels School Fair in the amount of $100. Council approved an advertise ment in the Blyth Festival brochure at a cost of $150.♦** The Homecoming Committee requested that the Christmas lights be put up for the Homecoming weekend.*** Brussels share of the Morris Twp. landfill budget is $33,655. *** County Weed Inspector John Gibson was appointed municipal weed inspector.**♦ Sarah Dauphin has been hired to fill the part-time office position.
