MVCA offers unique
Owl Prowl program
The Maitland Valley
Conservation Authority is offering
a unique Owl Prowl program at the
Wawanosh Nature Centre on
Tuesday, March 18.
The Owl Prowl is scheduled to
begin inside the Nature Centre at
7 p.m. with an introduction
highlighting the amazing
adaptations that enable owls to be
extremely successful hunters. Some
of the myjhs and legends
surrounding these nocturnal
creatures will be explored, and
MVCA staff plan to have various
hands-on displays on view
including photos, owl pellets, and
feathers. Visitors will become
acquainted with the majestic flight
of the great homed owl, the spooky
face of the bam owl, the tiny yet
tenacious saw-whet owl, and the
eerie call of the screech owl.
The second part of the program is
a night hike through the
Conservation Area led by MVCA
staff. During the walk, recordings
of owl calls will be played to entice
local owls to hoot back to the

and education assistant with the
MVCA, reports that although there
are no guarantees that owls will

Sound of music fills Centre
The stage at The Centre In The
Square will be filled with the
'sound of music' when Rodgers and
Hammerstein's classic, romantic
musical appears on March 31 and
April 1.
This glorious and uplifting all-
new national touring production of
The Sound of Music celebrates the
adventures of the famous von
Trapp Family Singers and includes
some of Richard Rodgers and
Oscar Hammerstein's most memor
able tunes: My Favourite Things,
Edelweiss, Lonely Goatherd,
Sixteen Going on Seventeen, the
title song The Sound of Music and
the Climb Every Mountain.
Winner of seven Tony awards
including Best Musical, Best Book
and Best Score, The Sound of
Music also garnered a Grammy for
Best Original Cast Album and a
Gold record. The 1965 film version
was the winner of five Academy
Awards including the Oscar for
Best Picture.
The Sound of Music was one of
Broadway's biggest smash hits. It
starred Mary Martin as Maria and
for 43 months, from its New York
opening in November, 1959, to its
closing in June, 1963, it became the
second longest-running musical of
the decade with a total of 1,443
performances. It was also the final
work of Oscar Hammerstein 11
who died nine months after the
opening.
The 1965 film version of the
musical starred Julie Andrews as
Maria and Christopher Plummer as
the Captain. The musical became
one of the highest-grossing motion
pictures of all time.
The Sound of Music follows the
real life story of the von Trapp
Family Singers, who delighted
concert hall audiences in American
and Europe in the late 1930s and
'40s. The family had lived securely
and happily in an Austrian castle
until the Nazi invasion forced them
to flee into exile and become
performers.
The musical begins with Maria
on the hills near Nonnberg Abbey
where she has escaped the
restrictions of the convent to do the
thing that she loves best - sing.
Maria's behaviour is often the
cause of great distress to the
conservative nuns of the abbey and
when a request comes from the
aristocratic Captain von Trapp for a
young woman who might be
governess to his seven motherless
children, the Mother Abbess
immediately thinks of Maria. The
decision proves to be wise and
Maria wins the hearts of the
children and eventually the heart of
their father.
Maria teaches the children the
joys of singing, and ultimately
helps the entire family escape the
threat to their lives and liberty

day.
The younger students also had
fun things happening in their
classrooms too. They participated
in colouring contests, classroom
parties, and the Student Council
chose some students from each
class who wore the most red and
white and gave them prizes.
During the month of February the
Grade 7 and 8 classrooms have
been studying the newspaper and
working on assignments as well.
They are using the Kitchener-
Waterloo Record and are now
using their third paper for informa
tion to do their reports. These
assignments help them to improve
their research and writing skills.
On Feb. 17, public speaking was
held in the gym. Three students
were chosen from every classroom
to present their speech before the
school. Parents and friends were
invited as well.
There were many different topics
such as being a redhead, Don
Cherry, pets, and the Donnellys of
Lucan. So far Crystal Edgar has
successfully said her speech at
school, the Brussels Legion and
was chosen to represent Grey at
Clinton on Saturday, March 1. Joel
Hemingway will also represent
Grey in the Junior division,
speaking about Don Cherry. The
two speakers are wished success by
their peers.
Friday, Feb. 28 was a dreaded
day for the students of Grey
Central. It is the day that the
second-term report cards went
home. The students have been
working extra hard to improve their
grades of late. They know there is
just one more term until summer
vacation and they can't wait. Four
more months until June, so parents
beware!
The Grade 8 students have much
to look forward to in the '97-'98
school year. It will be their first
year of high school. They have
