Hospital tinkering not over yet
The tinkering isn't over.
The bed distribution for Huron
and Perth County hospitals was re
examined at the March 4 meeting
of the Hospital and Related Health
Services Study group.
The numbers were determined
through collaboration with the eight
hospitals and a consensus approach
based on utilization analysis com
pleted last November.
At present, Huron County hospi
tals will have 184 beds to Perth
County's 222. The hospitals with
basic services, would have the fol
lowing numbers: Clinton Public,
19; South Huron in Exeter, 19; and
Seaforth Community, 34.
Alexandra Marine and General
would have 66 and Wingham and
District, 46. Both of these so-called
community hospitals would have
four monitored /ICU beds.
Once a single board and adminis
tration are set up, the task force
foresees the possibility of more
shuffling, based on system-wide
clinical programming and new gov
ernment policies.
The task force also confirmed
that the restructuring devised by
personnel from the eight hospitals
will save 13 per cent. Huron-Perth
funding has already been cut three
per cent in 1996/97 and it appears
the reductions will be 6.5 to seven
per cent next year, says the task
force report.
It has been determined that the
hospitals' commitment to saving
$10.4 million can'be achieved with
$3.4 million of that coming from
administration and support. This
will be pursued as soon as possible.
The task force said the remainder
of the savings can be found through
clinical efficiencies. The savings
must also cover a $750,000 rein
vestment in Home Care services to
support reduced inpatient use.
The task force recommended that
an interim governance committee
be in place by June, 1997, to design
and work towards a board structure
for the new system. The single
board is lop be established by
April, 1998.
Don’t tread on thin ice, Society warns
There are few winter scenes more
inviting than a river or pond topped
with layers of bumpy, marbled ice
- and few winter scenes more
dangerous to unsuspecting children.
One out of every 12 Canadians
who drowns each year, plunges to
death through unsafe ice. In almost
half of these cases, individuals
drown while simply walking,
playing or fishing.
Children shouldn't play on frozen
rivers, ponds and lakes. The crust
that forms on top of a river is
unstable thanks to water swirling
beneath it. Lake ice is most fragile
in frozen areas around an open
patch and along the shore. Avoid
rivers and lake shorelines, where
even ice that looks solid is weak.
The way to keep kids safe on ice
is to keep them off it. If they do
play on ice, it should be with a
buddy and under adult supervision.
As parents, remember if you are
not "within arms' reach" you've
gone too far.
If a child slips through thin ice,
to do not approach the hole or the
same may happen to you. First call
for help, then help from a distance
with encouragement and a long
assist: a rope, ladder, hockey stick,
etc. If there is a lifejacket or
buoyant-object around, the rescuer
should put it on to protect
themselves in the event that they
fall in.
When the victim grabs the assist,
pull gently to ease her or him out of
the water. Then, tell the child to
Steckle seeks Liberal nomination

"Since my election as the
Member of Parliament for Huron
Bruce I can assure you that I have

Steckle said. "During the last
election I campaigned with the
personal slogan of Priority; the
People, and I feel that my
representation has been a reflection
of that ideal."
Steckle said he is proud of the
accomplishment of the government
and would be proud to move ahead
into the next century as a member
of that government. "The
